As the title of the tread says.
So do ya rotate between the two?
I generally do. Iād guess itās near 50/50 whether I play acoustic or electric.
Though lately Iām thinking thereās something wrong with me. Iāve been playing mostly acoustic lately which I find strange for me. I really do like either/or and my music taste when listening to music is also that way. I like electric songs and I like acoustic songs.
I went to much trouble over 3 years to find electrics that I like. In that time frame also found my āperfectā amp for me.
In them three years I got one acoustic. I feel I really scored good as I just near canāt get enough of the tones my acoustic produces. Got it used too. Wasnāt even looking for the particular guitar that I got. Just stumbled onto it.
Like I say, Iām feeling like thereās something wrong with me lately. For the last 2 weeks or so I mostly been playing my acoustic. Iām just digging the pick it up and play aspect of it. Or perhaps it could be the two songs Iām working on now are both acoustic? Maybe.
I did play my casino into my prri yesterday though. Just to play electric for a bit. I did dig the tones, like usual, that I get out the this combo setup. Great tone. Today, Iāve got the acoustic back out⦠Iām looking forward to this spring, summer, and fall. I love playing on my back stoop. Guess which goes outside with me most. Yep, the acoustic. For sure though, Iāll take the electric outside too. Obviously easier to take the acoustic outside though. Itās one trip and play vs 4-5 trips to get the electric outside, and then play. Reverse order of trips to put them away after Iām done playing.
Whatās your story? 50/50? or do ya find yourself playing one more than the other?
I play both pretty much every day. The acoustic remains more difficult for me, particularly barre chords. On days when I only play one, itās the electric.
Depends on what I am playing Jim but yes I tend to use acoustic for David bowie, John Lennon Bob Dylan type songs and fingerstyle, and electric for rock type songs
I used to, but now I devote 100% of my playing time to my electrics. I quit playing a steel-string acoustic some 5 years ago, apparently for no valid reason. well, letās say I wasnāt particularly happy with the sound of my LAG Tramontane series. However, in the period when I did rotate between the two, I didnāt find switching from one to the other difficult or cumbersome. Things were drastically different when, many years ago, I played a nylon-string classical AND was often switching between that and a solid-body electric. When I would grab the classical after hours of playing an electric I had a feeling that I couldnāt play any more and had to struggle to make it sound as it should. Now I think it was a matter of the considerably wider neck (we donāt face this problem playing a steel-string acoustic).
All in all - only electric guitars now, for the variety of sounds and ease of recording. They are just more inspiring for me now.
I decided to give playing guitar another try a bit over 2 years ago. At that time I had an electric guitar (from the previous failed attempt) but I bought an acoustic and thatās all I played for at least 18 months. Having the focus on one instrument served me well I think in getting through the difficult absolute beginner stages.
Maybe 4 months ago I resumed electric guitar. My goal was to split my time fairly evenly between the two and I mostly did that playing both every day for at least a few minutes.
At the moment Iām still playing both each day but the electric is getting more play time. This isnāt about which I prefer more, itās that Iāve got to the point that I can strum along to songs on my acoustic guitar reasonably competently and now my electric playing needs bringing up to the same level where I know a small repertoire of songs specific to each.
If Iām guessing then Iāll always want to play a bit of both. Iām a fan of loud rock music so electric guitar has always been something Iāve wanted to play (just not had the patience/mindset/determination etc) but thereās something very appealing about the relative simplicity of acoustic guitar, grab it, tune it, play it.
I feel that Iām still enough of a beginner that even if I only pick up my acoustic guitar for 5 minutes each day (if electric is getting more time) then Iām still learning. At the moment barre chords are the focus and a few minutes at a time is still helpful
Interesting.
Folks that play both, play both in one day. That I donāt generally do. I store in cases. I get one out in the morning and thatās what I play today. Obviously not always true, but mostly true.
I dig what your saying John about playing whatās proper for said song. Iād say I do that too. However to mix it up some. Have ya tried playing your acoustic songs on electric? Visa Versa? I near find that fun. Like playing God Save The Queen, Sex Pistols, on acoustic. Or perhaps Revolution, then it near becomes Revolution 1 (Beatles).
Iām guessing that can have a large effect on your choice. I got 2 acoustics. One was my only guitar from age 16 to 61. Obviously I liked that guitar. But now I got a different one. I only play that new one. And I love it too. Both sound good enough, but the new one sounds better imho. Oddly thatās a 6 vs a 12 string. The 12 being my original.
Strange, thatās about where I was at too.
And that might be why Iām thinking Iām being strange at the moment, not playing my electric in a couple of weeks (much). I donāt know why Iām doing this. Iāve always rotated if I have the opportunity.
I keep mine in their cases in the winter. When itās time to play, I take them both out and put them in their stands. I play electric first, then play acoustic, and when Iām done I put them both back in their cases with the humidification devices.
Mine are all out on a rack in my front room. I do live in the U.K. so thereās no extreme climate to affect my guitars and I live alone, so thereās no partner to upset, or kids/pets to knock over my guitars. I know that even the minor inconvenience of a case would see me play less, particularly the 5 minute sessions which can be so useful for practicing a little technique.
Ultimately though as long as youāre playing guitar I think thatās the main thing. It might be that youāll be on YouTube tomorrow, see some kickass electric guitar tutorial by pure chance and then play nothing but electric for the next month
I definitely play both but it rotates in phases. Sometime more acoustic, sometimes electric. I probably favor the acousitc overall becasue its just pick up and play, and when I perform that is always acoustic. But i do enjoy playing the electric.
i also dont want to lose either skill. amd i think that you can learn more aboit acoustic playing by understanding electric etc. The biggest issue I find is finger pressure. If i spend too time playing one or the other, i end up pressing too hard or soft on the other.
Iāve picked up my acoustic literally twice in the last 2 years and played it. Its all electric for me now it seems. No conscious decision. Just the way its panned out.
Itās varied over time. I started on an acoustic, before buying an electric but I still used the acoustic more often since I was mostly learning acoustic songs and finger style, and I didnāt know how to solo and thatās what my mind associated the electric guitar as āforā. Over the last year, Iāve used them about equally.
Which one I use depends on āserious practiceā versus ājust playing when Iāve got a few minutesā. For the former I pick whatās appropriate for the lesson of course. For the latter itās usually my small acoustic thatās always on a stand near the couch!
I play my electric almost every evening before bed.
Each one teaches me something different and I can get lost for hours in the sounds of either one.
In the winter I play the electric a little more because the nights are longer. In the summer I play the acoustic more because I can play on the front porch.
I tend to rotate between the two. There are periods where I mostly play acoustic, and periods where I mostly play electric. Not sure why; itās just how it works out.
I havenāt touched my electric in 2 years. All acoustic. I have a steel string, a classical nylon and a flamenco with Metal wrapped nylon (JP folk fingerstyle) making them all quite different. That is enough. How do you all play those skinny electric necks anyway? I have small hands but my narrowest nut is 46mm.
For about a year now, Iāve pretty much picked my acoustic 6 and 12 string guitars up only to dust them off every once in a while. (Yes, we all know how visibility alone increases the chance of a guitar being played. ) Since last summer, my playing time has been divided roughly to 70% bass and 30% electric guitar. I didnāt plan it like that, itās just how it turned out to be. And Iām not feeling bad about it.
I started by wanting to play rock on electric. It quickly dawned on me that my 66 year old beginnerish fingers werent up to soloing techniques.. Im now having great fun on my acoustic with plenty of techniques to learn and the electrics will soon be on the wall.
Due to excessive GAS attacks, I find myself with more guitars than days in the week. I use a different guitar each day of the week. Monday thru Saturday I play mainly electric (unless a particular song sounds better on an acoustic or resonator). Sunday is reserved for acoustic guitar and I concentrate on my campfire list of songs. It is much easier to take an acoustic to a gathering than lug the amp needed for an electric.
After playing electrics with mostly 9s during the week, I find my fingertips are sore come Sunday night.
Mostly electric these days with an odd nod to my, and I have be honest here, appalling acoustic. So, if I had a decent aucoustic? Then I would guess Iād play it more.
