Drinking from a fire hose - so much stuff, how can I organise my learning?

Hi - evuljeanne here. New to this site, but here on the planet for over 70 years. This is a great resource - BUT THERE IS SO MUCH STUFF! I was hoping that the “songbook” would be a place to put TABs and lyrics for songs we are working on, but it just links to the lesson for the song. I just want to check to see if I’m missing something? I access the lessons on my laptop, and have the song app on my phone (I don’t want to use my phone for the lessons). I think Justin is amazing (maybe I have a little crush on him), but I don’t want my progress with the guitar to get bogged down with sidetracks into all the other “stuff”, so any advice from the old-timers to this program will be welcome! As for some background - I play piano and can read music, but have a limited knowledge of music theory, and have just come around to thinking the TAB isn’t evil. <3

Hello and welcome! You came to the right place.

An answer to the “side tracking” might be to create a folder on your laptop and put the most important stuff there. That’s what i do.
I keep all my tabs, sheetmusic, etc, in one giant folder on my laptop.
That way, there’s no chance of getting distracted. It keeps me on track.
Otherwise i get way to easily pulled into the rabbithole of “oh, what’s this?” and before i know it, another hour has passed.

Welcome

@GrytPipe is good
you should create your own folder with all the things you need to learn in it and go on the website only the moment you want to learn something new

thats what I do

Thanks, friends - that totally makes sense! I’m working my way through the beginner’s lessons, so I am on the website everyday, but, of course, I also want to be learning songs. Justin suggests a number of good ones, but I guess it’s easiest to find the TAB and lyrics on other sites, or am I just not seeing it here? I have a binder of some songs I have found that I like prior to joining here, and I would love to add to it.

Hello Jeanne & Welcome!!!

I’m also a Website + App user.

I like to watch the lessons on the website & primarily use the app for “guitar karaoke”! That’s what seems to work well, as for not getting distracted by “other stuff”, it’s a challenge for sure.

I tend to be a pen -n- pad guy, so I keep a hand written Goals list in a spiral notebook… I may have 15 different things at a time so when I have practice time, I’ll pick 5 or so & work on them. When I feel that a particular scale or technique is “in the bag”, I check it off the list. Having a notebook is useful for reviewing too. Flip back a few pages & see what I was working on a few months ago & make sure that skill is still there… being in my mid-sixties, I don’t always trust my memory!

Good luck & have lots of Fun!!!

Tod from New Mexico

Thanks, Tod! Yes, that is basically what I am doing now. I like the app for playing along, and also like to have the music in a binder so I can play w/o having my face in a phone or computer. I muck around a bit with classical guitar as well, so having a paper version of the music I am working on is nice (tab or notation). I like the idea of the notebook and writing down goals and looking back to review. I think having that notebook in front of my music binder might work great! I’m a bit older than you are (ok, more than a bit, I admit), so my memory isn’t so hot either!

welcome Jeanne old fashioned but same as Tod I have 3 large books and keep all my songs, chord diagrams, notes and lesson plan in that means I do not have to fire up the laptop every time I want to play something. don’t use the app just the web site works for me.

Hi Jeanne

Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Hi Jeanne, welcome to the community. You have already gotten good advice. I’m 70 and need help to jog my memory sometimes, so I have a notebook with sections for current practice, consolidation, theory/rhythm and songs. I mostly use the practice section and have a page with my practice elements with columns to check off what was done each day and another page to record what I have done each day such as what songs or techniques I practiced and any problems I had. I subscribe to the Justin TAB service instead of the app. That has chord/lyrics sheets for all the songs and TABs for most of the songs that can be accessed from the song lessons on the website. When I first started though, I purchased one of the Justin beginner songbooks and used with the song lessons. I also started a learning log in the Community Hub to keep track of my progress. Over time you will find the best ways to help keep you focused on your guitar journey.

Thanks, Steve. I have been using the app and collecting the TAB for the songs I like. I’ve also been delving into theory some, which I love. I never learned it when playing the piano. and I am finding it very cool. I guess it’s the engineer in me…
