E9 THE Funk Chord

E9 is surprisingly hard to play. Googling this topic has tons of hits. Either the A string buzzes or the high E string buzzes. But it seems if you bend the A string slightly up it falls into place;) Just a tip.

The mini barre is still very difficult for me…

the upper knuckle in my 3rd finger doesnt bend back far enough to get a clean A string. will it eventually stretch if i keep at it?

This chord breaks the bones of my fingers to dust.

This is not a chord that will have under the tools belt in a day, but in time, mybe in weeks.

Thank you Justin for the great course.

why does everyone put the E9 chord into the beginners’ funk course? There are easier chords. Instead of focusing on rhythm people will struggle with E9

Intermediate Grade 6 is hardly ā€˜beginner’ territory.

And also first covered in Essential Blues Rhythm which is also Grade 6 and comes before the Funk module, which is not labelled as a beginners ā€œcourseā€.

Wow, talk about difficult grips, man. This 3rd finger mini-barre version of E9 is surely up there with your first A-shape barre chords.

What helped me most was to make sure the pick got nowhere close to the 6th string and to push that string just a tiny little bit upwards with my middle finger so that the fingertip left the 4th string enough room to vibrate and ring out clear.

I still can’t get it to sound very nice consistently (I’ve been practicing it only for a day) but I’m positive I’ll get there sooner than later provided the top joint of my ring finger endures.

I think there’s errors in the chord diagrams. In all three chord grips the X above the A string should be over the low E string, since we are muting the low-E and playing the A. And the X above the high-e string should be deleted altogether, since that note is played. An indication of which frets are being played would be useful too.

Agree. Some ā€˜typos’ need fixing here.

With the E7#9 though, I’d be muting that high e.
Generally the way its played.

Agree too. I think otherwise the #9 wouldn’t be prominent enough if the high e is played. I just started with learning some funk and love to train my right hand with endless ā€žpick up the piecesā€œ intro
