Epic guitar solos

Heheheheā€¦ i was very surprised when i watched it the first time  yeah. Dani Harrisons face is pretty priceless

Well, it seems like most of great solos were already mentioned while I left this post till evening to add my two cents.
Firstly, that Prince solo is one of the greatest pieces of guitar playing and showmanship Iā€™ve ever seen. The first time I saw it my mind just blowed.
Secondly, all those iconic solos are iconic for a reason. Stairway, Comfortably Numb and Hey You, Highway Star, Sweet Child and November Rain, Hotel California and many others. Itā€™s impossible to pick one over the other. Though Richie Kotzen called Hotel California the best guitar solo and I think heā€™s not entirely wrong.
But to add something to the topic Iā€™m gonna name one of my favourites, dual solo from Blackbird by Alter Bridge. First of all, itā€™s a perfect song and a strong contender for my favourite song ever. And both Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti are amazing players with their own styles that compliment each other so well.

Hopefully one day Iā€™ll be able to learn it. Not today though.

I may be in the minority that as someone playing the guitar and appreciating quality playing, Iā€™m not super crazy about the solo aspect. When it comes to solos, I like the ones that serve the song rather than the ego of the player; and also if the solo actually interacts with what the other instruments are playing.

That said, here are some guitar solos I like that havenā€™t been mentioned yet (linked where the solos start):

I bought a Guild Paloma SC3 copy (itā€™s not in this video, he uses it live) because of this song, I donā€™t know if that makes it epic but I sure like it.

I prefer BB Kingā€™s more modern material.

I love B.B., and that shows his virtuosity, but it does nothing for me. :man_shrugging:

Such a funny video. But itā€™s also very hard to not appreciate how perfect that editing is.

Yeah I didnā€™t think that sounded like Lucille. Was I duped by a deep fake? Really good one if so.

Incoming rant.

That B.B. King video is from the 1993 Montreux Jazz Festival and Iā€™m pretty sure he wasnā€™t playing Yngwie, and yes, the editing is good enough that the video should have a disclaimer on it. There is far too much being passed off as real these days when it is nothing more than a pack of lies. We see the trouble this causes every single day. . .

Do you watch it often for inspo, or because itā€™s epic and gives you goosebumps, or both?

Redbud Tree by Mark Knopfler wasnā€™t something that came to mind when I was thinking ā€˜epic soloā€™ and itā€™s not even Mark Knopflerā€™s best, but Iā€™m in love with the song at the moment and listen to it at least once (several times) a day lately, and really feel the solo.

I watch and listen to a lot of music through Youtube. So i have it in a playlist.
I have to watch it, just listen to his playing does not give me muchā€¦ there is a lot of other music that trigger me more than just his playing. It is the whole package that does it for me. All the great artists on the stage, Tom Pettyā€¦ and then suddenly he just steps out and pulls this solo offā€¦
i read somewhere that this happened right after rolling stone magazine had made a list of the 100 best guitarists. And Prince was left out. So this was some kind of a testament of his skillsā€¦
dont know if that is 100% true thoughā€¦

Thatā€™s such a dumb thing. Both their old 100 and new 250 lists.

This oneā€™s going to be an endless thread / topic Trond!!

No doubt I can / will think of many more, but the first that comes to mind is Kirkā€™s solo for Unforgiven. This section of the documentary of the making of the black album is interesting, and the discussion (well argument really!) on the dynamics of the solo are actually quite valuable imo.

Yep. Agree

Oh yeah!! That is a great solo!!

The fact Guthrie wasnā€™t in the 250 list, obviously imo, highlights this point perfectly! Music and musicians are individually subjective, thatā€™s the pointā€¦

Guthrie being more melodic, less shred-tastic.

If weā€™re talking melodic, then this under-rated chap is hard to beat.
Thereā€™s far (far!) too many beautiful solos through his 40 years with Marillion and whilst not my personal favourites, I suspect ā€˜Sugar Miceā€™ (@ 12.33) and ā€˜Easterā€™ (@ 13.45) seem to be generally popular and could make a fair stab at an entry somewhere.

Best guitar solo of all times - Mark knopfler

Hereā€™s one you might like to check out on you tube.

 :joy:
Me feeling so so stupid ā€¦ I mean ā€™ Iā€™ll listen to a few because Iā€™d also like to practice the guitar myself ā€™
:see_no_evil:
Greetings :sunglasses:
