F Chord Changes

Welcome to the Community, Shazeroo :guitar:

I hate to even say how long I’ve been playing guitar off and on over the years, and I thought I had the F chord down pretty well until I just started to play Louie Louie in C. Wow, what a brain teaser that is. Three very simple chords (with some palm muting along the way), but keeping that easy rhythm going through the changes I found to be incredibly difficult!

Thanks Justin for having such an in depth course available to all of us!

Found the tip about roughly putting down the bar then adjusting g it after putting down the notes made at the difference in my F chord struggles. Much appreciated keep up the great work and enjoy the day.

Barre F to Barre G is the easiest movement.

I’ve got my F chord consistently sounding pretty good. I’m even shifting it up and down the neck and playing E-shape barre chords pretty good. I’m struggling with changing from open chords to the F. The C-F change is okay. I can do that and keep in time. I think Am-F is getting better. The G-F change is really difficult. I find that the guitar neck actually moves when I’m trying to make that change. I’ve tried doing simple four strums to the bar and making the change on beat 1, and sometimes I make it okay. But generally, I’m struggling with G-F. I haven’t tried D-F. When changing to F, I tend to get my third finger in place on the C first, and the rest of the chord follows. It’s my second finger that doesn’t land well (on the A). Not sure what to do except keep working at it, and, like Justin said, kind of step back and pay attention to what’s happening. If anybody has suggestions about the guitar neck moving during the change, I’d love to hear it. I think what’s happening is my arm is resting on the guitar (a 000 style acoustic) and trying to rotate the guitar clockwise, while my fretting hand pulls it in the opposite direction. When I release my fretting hand to make the change, my arm pulls the guitar clockwise.

Which G chord grip do you use? For me, the F-G change is easier if I use middle, ring and pinky fingers to play the G. With this grip, the middle and ring fingers are already on the right frets, they just need to change strings and the index is free to get that barre down quickly.

Also, depending on the song and style, you could play the G as a barre chord on fret 3, making the change to F very easy.

I’ve been using the 2-finger G with the middle and ring fingers. I’ll try what you suggest. Thank you!

I just smash the whole lot at once and that works for me!

That is the full f cord.

I just go barre F to barre G. I learned Dylan’s Like A Rolling Stone a while ago where the chorus is C-F-G and that’s where I’ve been practicing
Also the intro in that song is C-Fmaj7/C which is also good for practice. Great song and great for practice!
