Fade Into You - Mazzy Star

Hey everyone.

I’ve been working on this one for a while, I’m still not that happy with it but I done this one in two takes because I couldn’t be bothered redoing it till it was my best as I feel like I must have played this song 40 times by now.

I struggled with this initially because of the high tempo and the different timing, and also infact the strumming pattern. But I’ve persisted with it. I’m trying to work on my rhythm and strumming patterns with songs that do different things like this.

Upon reviewing this myself, I think some of the chord changes were kind of sloppy and it looks like my movement to the G shape (or A chord) is a bit slow and I’m catching the open strings (but it doesn’t sound too bad I suppose.)

I took on some feedback from my last video and ditched the sitting position with the arms getting in the way, and recently transitioned to standing (2 or 3 weeks ago) and this has knocked me back a little. But I think it’s worth it as my F chord is much easier now.

Please let me know of any feedback.

Sounds good to me Rick. Seems to me your doing well imho.
As for playing it 40 times. Yer cool. I would guess I record any song I’ve done 40 times (that’s 39 times I erase what I did and start over). And that’s just how many times I record it. I’d guess I play any particular song 2 to 3 times that many times before I’m only ‘kinda happy’…
So hang in there. Your doing good and yer sounding good to me.
Your strumming is looking and sounding good!
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rick, I’ve never counted but i’m pretty certain I practice a song more than 40 time before I bother recording it. You sound like you’re on the right path. Good work. Only thing I’d say is I think your strumming action could be a bit more “wristy”, if that makes sense.

Nice Rick. Thats a great song. Mazzy Star, I was lucky to see them perform a couple of times. My wife loves Hope Sandoval they have similar personalities. Dont worry about how many times it take to get your recording . I have honestly. Played a song 30 or 40 times in a row, recording and re-recording deleting it new take. Making mistakes forgeting a lyric. Voice breaks even simply just stalling on a cord. It happens to us all. The important thing about the fretting hand is to just keep going with the flow and as long as you have a nice regular strum no one will really notice slight mistakes.

So again great job, love the song and your rendition. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing and posting.

Congrats on transitioning to standing up

I would recommend to work with a metronome because you lose the tempo in the song sometimes

Believe me , I practice a song way more than 40 times before being happy with it

Thanks. I think I know what you mean by that. I’ve been trying to learn Wonderwall and it’s tough on my arm. Maybe I need to use more wrist.

Thanks for the feedback. I did notice this happening throughout the song. I normally do play with the metronome but decided to turn it off for this recording and evidently my timing is still off without it haha.

Well done on the progress made, Rick, coming along well.

If I have to nit-pick just a little, looks to me at times there is some slight hesitation at times in the strumming after an up-stroke. I get the sense of a slightly ‘choppy’ action, but slight. I suggest try to work on as fluent and smooth up down as possible at this stage.

Keep on keeping on

Hi Rick,
about 40 times is on average that I go into recording a video let alone the times I practice it before I start doing so.
It is noticeable that your strumming arm does not make a smooth movement and often falters, a constant lever that goes up and down smoothly is a very difficult exercise in the beginning, but it will make a big difference … Have fun with it

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It does look like I’ve got myself into a weird rhythm where I’m not in full motion and pausing, I suspect this is why I’m losing rhythm a few times. Something to work on! Thanks again.

Hi Rick,

Fantastic song - one i was going to suggest to Katja to cover.

Think you’ve got the rhythm under your fingers.
Nice tone and captured the overall vibe.

Good to hear this classic.

Great work - especially transition to standing position! I guess this is a game changer in many aspects and not easy.

Thanks. It’s put my progress back a bit in some respects but I wanted to do earlier to reinforce some good practices (mainly getting used to not staring at the fretboard while playing ha)
