Fingerstyle Blues Haircut Memo

Hello there,

I would like to share with you I learned new short tune with fingerstyle blues.

I also mention in name haircut… I am just gonna say here I was talking about it in my last topic and it happened. Hope no one gets bored by idea.
Also… I am still using that pinky. I just use it, because it fits.

For people looking for tune only skip to 45 seconds of this video.

Now I am working on my “biggest” song ever and that is hallelujah.

Have a nice day. Any feedback is welcomed. ^^

Ole Samson, he lost his power with his hair shorn.

But you, you obtained awesome finger picking style !!!

I just love that style of blues, and could listen to it most all the day long…

@mundeli Thank you very much. Me too! I really like the vibe. Only thing I am looking for is how to make some transition chord to play it in loop so it is not that short.

Do you have any idea for that?

Very nicely done.

You could add a “vamp”. That’s sort of a simple interlude that you can insert between choruses of a 12-bar (or any) blues. Can also be used as an intro and/or outro.

The following video explains it and shows an example. It’s in the key of E, so you could just take the same vamp, or use it as a starting point and work out your own. (His song is using a shuffle bass groove, but you could adapt it to steady thumb easily enough.)

The vamp stuff starts at around 7:15:

@jjw Thank you and thanks for share! I am jumping straight in! I think this was missing piece all the time, because I got vibe melody tunes around 30-60 seconds and having some connecting to loop them is what could make my brain feel I am playing… something.

Grear blues vibe, loved it Michal.

I love the crafting of the video, the passing of the baton from long-hair to short-hair versions of you!

Have you looked at Justin’s solo blues fingerstyle lessons at all? All in the key of E and all designed to blend, mesh, work together once you have them as stand alone pieces.

@Willsie Thank you, I am happy you can feel it too.

@Richard_close2u Thank you Richard. One day… when I have kids I will show it to them.
I know about this course but I dont feel like I am ready yet. Overall… I am still advanced beginner in Grade 2 beginning.
Thanks for recommendation. There is really lot to learn and now I made little “spin off” with Hallelujah and its starting to sound like something… I will share, some day.
I really like how every song/tune has something special, like in this one I learned to play A chord in different position, I guess its triad? And it works!
I like when tune learn me something new and like this I am slowly exploring fretboard.

Hi Michal,
You’re a little crazy…I like it. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Richard’s tip is a good one, so you learn what you already do a little but just a little better a little bit more difficult that first one, but certainly not a major level jump and learning it in the right rhythm, here are the updated first versions…

Greetings

Edit:

ps: learning things in the right order is of course super important and I see that those blues things from Justin are grade 4, but because you are already so busy with your thumb bass and fingerstyle what you don’t learn in grade 1 or 2 is … and I think what Richard is going by and in any case the reason I say that. It is better to learn it well right away and from that point on, start coming up with all sorts of things yourself, experimenting, etc
and as for the first of these songs, many are more difficult to find in grade 3… by the way, these were previously standalone courses…

Hello Michal! What a great video. We’re supposed to have fun learning guitar, and you are leading the way! If you don’t make it as a musician, perhaps you’ll have a career as a mime!

I too am leaning into fingerstyle playing, taking songs I learned to strum and developing fingerstyle versions. I too just cut my long hair.

Will this make us both better guitarists? I certainly hope so!

@mfeeney0110 Great, you are looking good! I am pretty sure you sleep now much better because I was getting too hot in the night. Hot like hot, not hot like hot.

@roger_holland Thank you Rogier, good points.
The main thing about this… is when I was graduating Grade 1 I already learned Anouk Lost fingerstyle. And in the beginning of Grade 2 I found out I am really into fingerstyle and not into pick strumming so I went to discover what else is here, because Justin is not that focused on fingerstyle and I totally understand that.
My current main source for fingerstyle is Paul Davids, so its really hard to tell on which level I am.
I think somehow… its clicking. I spent really lot of time developing some techniques and now I need to focus on learning some “real” songs and my first ever BIG one is now Hallelujah and I can see I can do it. Year ago… I was not even able to think and see what is needed to do it.
You think I have some bad habit on my independent thumb? I welcome any critics so I know what to aim for.

Some more great playing Michal!
Very well done.

Didn’t the haircut hurt?

You already have the answer: more practice

If you’re not familiar with the names of Etta Baker and Mississippi John Hurt you might check 'em out. Could be they’ll inspire you yet more.

Looking forward to hearing/seeing your progress.

Keep it up, whatever it is you’re doing, it’s working!

Cool video! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I would second Richard and Rogier.
While you say you are in Grade 2, you are definitely a bit further in some fields. I often searched for stuff that I found intriguing and if it was too much forward, gave it a try. At times, I let it go and took a mental note for later, at other times, I was ready for the lesson even if not there, gade-wise.

@HappyCat Thank you. :slight_smile:
Heh it was show for my coworkers, we had in our company Family Day celebrating 30 years of exist and there was barber shop, first ever experience on such place for me. So many coworkers were watching me loosing my hair. It was lot of them.
The day after lot of colleagues talked to me pointing to my new haircut… even they are people they never talk to me. But I feel like I lost some kilograms of weight… only bad habit now is I still tend to comb my hair with hand, but it arent here.

@mundeli Thank you for such a positive spirit. I am gonna check the tunes. I had my eye for “nobody knows you when you are down and out” but I found I am not ready for that, yet.

@domi7 Thank you very much, Dom.
Yeah… my not straight journey following something really comes hand to hand with I dont have any strict practice routine and it works. Some how. The main thing is I am enjoying that. I am pretty sure one day I will jump back to Grade 2 on JG and progress will be much smoother for me then the time I was here.

@Enky08 Thank you, I am happy you enjoyed.

When I saw your video yesterday, it instantly made me smile! I like the video very much (and the new haircut suits you quite well) but more important I saw you are really on your way with finger picking! I have to second what others already said…you are already ahead of Grade 2 stuff, at least if it’s about finger picking and you definitely have found your direction. I see no reason not to try out more advanced stuff, even if you feel like being in Grade 2. I mean, you played Fright Train with ease… and every other piece I watched from you was very nicely played. So don’t hold back… Keep on picking!

@Helen0609 Thank you for kind words. I am happy it makes your day. Now I am working on Hallelujah and it sounds like something… because the pattern is not always the same. I will share some day.
That Freight Train was nice try about thumbpick, but I dont use it anymore. Something on bare fingers just feels more connected to instrument for me.

And thanks for haircut opinion!
