Jay, that was a really nice performance. I think guitar, voice and mix are sounding good. A very good cover, indeed!

@think2100 Nice job!

This has to be a toughy to play and sing at the same time. You’ve got it down very nicely and the guitar and voice are coming through very well.

Any other James Taylor songs that you enjoy playing?

Wow! That is so good! James Taylor with your personality added to both guitar playing and singing. I spent a lot of time trying to learn this song and got nowhere near your level.

Jeremy, indeed, I find many of JT’s songs very challenging to play and sing. He often has tricky rhythms where the voice and guitar are difficult to put together. That’s true at the end of this song, which I did not get quite right on the recording. I use to do simplified versions of several of his others, but have not done so in quite a while. I would like to learn Something in the Way She Moves, but I think that one may be more difficult than Fire and Rain.

Thanks John. You might come back to it again at a later date. I first tried to learn this song about a year ago, and struggled with it for weeks before settling it aside. It was still difficult for me this time around, but at least I could get a lot closer to the original.

Yeah he does. Ya did real good at the end imho.
Yep, I’m another that is leaning this song and putting the vocals to it is down right hard. The timing can be most difficult. Especially when I don’t like to sing.

Interesting how yer playing the walk down for ‘I’ve seen fire and rain’ part. That 1st D chord (barred @3). I’ve gone back and forth as to how I want to do that. Your doing it the way I was first inclined to do it. I’ve now decided that I’m going that D chord more like a mini barre. 1st finger barring top three strings, 2nd finger on the D note, B string, then walk down. To me it seems more flowing than bringing your pinky across, then going to the Dmaj7. The way I’m describing it ya just keep that barred D and walk down the A string. I’m learning this from a tab I got off ultimate guitar I think. The version (interpretation) for the walk down is D, Dmaj7, Bm7, E11back to the A with the diddy. That diddy is kinda hard to with the pull offs. The tab I got has that diddy changing to various alternative notes being played too. Quite difficult for sure.
Anyways, ya did a great job on that and yer timing was very good with the vocals.

A fun listen for sure.
Good job!

I may get around to recording this, but the vocals are a real stumbling block for me. So I might not too… Wish I liked to sing.
Looks to me that your guitar playing is about what I’ve figured out too short of how your doing the walk down.

Your mix is real good too. Well done and thanks for sharing. That sure is a great song that don’t leave your mind very fast.

Well Jay,
I think you did a great job on this. Both the vox and guitar finger work were excellent.

This makes me wonder how long have you been playing? You are very accomplished and it shows.

All the best,
LB

One of my favourite songs and one I am afraid of approaching ! Well as expected you put your stamp on it. Superbly sung and played sir. Do not be a stranger.

LBro, thank you. I played a number of years in my 20’s, but didn’t take lessons and stuck to pretty easy stuff. Then when I retired about 5 years ago I took it up again, found Justin and really tried to learn some new things. I got up to his intermediate lessons, but then took a detour the past year into learning and writing songs and trying to get used to playing in front of people at open mics.

Thanks, Toby, I spent about 8 months preparing a list of songs to be sung with a couple of friends of mine back in my home town. We played 2 nights. The first was pretty bad because we only had two days to rehearse together, and the equipment was not loud enough for the venue, but the second night went much better, and we had a great time doing it.
