First ever song - went All Too Well?

Hi,

This is the first time that I have ever played guitar or sung for anyone else to hear.
Not even my wife has ever heard me play or sing a song before.

I have really only done this to hold myself to account for actually learning to play a song all the way through. I can see straightaway a dozen things that could have been done better, so perhaps by way of feedback, could you please be kind and just limit yourselves to one or two things that I could focus upon to improve my next attempt?

Thank you.

That was great. Not easy to sing and play. I’m not the right person to give guitar playing advice but I enjoyed it.

Hi Phil
Congratulations on posting your first song! :party_popper:
It’s a real achievement and I know how hard this can be.
I’m not the best person to give guitar playing advice either, but I think you did well.
Like you said, you picked up on things yourself just by recording yourself.
I don’t know the song but I enjoyed it. Great job on the singing too, you have a lovely voice  :sunflower:

Hi Phil.
Well done for recording yourself playing and singing for the first time! I’m not familiar with the song either, but I enjoyed it. You were keeping good rhythm and singing in tune.
One thing I would suggest is that you add a bit of gain to your guitar (from your amp). It would help the tone by making it sound fuller and less sharp.
Keep it up.

Well done Phil, the first one is the most difficult.
You’ve cracked one of hardest things, that is singing and playing together. Now you can concentrate on the other element and I’ll respect your request for only a couple of pointers. :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:
Try to introduce some variation in your strumming pattern. You were a bit too repetitive.
Get out of the habit of watching your fretting hand all the time. It can be a hard habit to break if it becomes ingrained.
And the final one is simply a video comment. Change the settings on your phone. You’re not left handed. :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Well, whether I am left-handed or not is a whole other conversation for another time, but you are right, this video is reversed.
Thanks for your feedback, it is all very useful.

Hi Avalon,
I didn’t really think that I wanted feedback but your comments are very kind and have really encouraged me to continue.
Thank you!

Many thanks, Mr Ontime!

Real good Phil.
Congrats on your first song to share with us. Your music sounded real good.

As for comments, I have only one. Please turn up your guitar amp so we can hear your guitar better. I found it difficult to hear the guitar part. What I could hear of the guitar I liked, so no reason not to turn it up a bit.
imho, leave the effects off. That song seemed like it wanted to be played clean. And clean it was, as clean as a not plugged in electric guitar almost.

A very good 1st song.
Thanks for sharing. Please do some more. With yer amp turned up a bit please…

Hi Phil

Your first video  :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:  that is a big thing … and you are singing also :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I think the way you ask for feedback is really good…

and for now I just want to say go for the focus for your rhythm guitar arm/hand …You will encounter these lessons early in grade 1 … first "just smooth that rhythm guitar arm and then add that singing again… be proud and share this beginning with your wife…it is tons better than my beginning :sweat_smile:and I just showed it here and at home… then later they will be even more proud of what we have achieved

Keep on going :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
