First snow is the sweetest

Great thread Nicole, reminded me of this NMA classic. Love this song but don’t think I shared in this new house - did on the old place.

@MacOneill Exactly. Not Christmas related

@brianlarsen Uuh, I love the one metaphor. Hmm, under what kind of snow is this secret buried? How long will the secret last…? Great lyrics.

Nice one, Gordon @sairfingers

@LadyOfTheCastle I’m more than just a tiny bit jealous. I have never seen Nick Cave live yet. It’s almost a wonder that he still alive. Was it good?

Aah… And I really like the “first snow” song. Luckily it features slightly dissonant jingling and jangling only.

@TheMadman_tobyjenner Toby, you actually did post the song when you replied to something in my LL. I think it was in January or so. That led me yo do a deep, deep dive into the music of NMA :sunglasses:

@roger_holland If fun fighting with Brian leads to you digging out as good music as the Snowy White song. Please you keep doing what you are doing

And … @MacOneill again: nooo… nooo …nooo … This will be stuck in my ears for the rest of the day

It was the first time I saw him. He’s absolutely fabulous live. He can get the audience to explode, and be completely silent 5 min later. No idea how he can still be alive indeed after the live he’s led, let alone be so energetic on stage (for 2h40min, no less). If you get the chance, go see him - it’s worth it!

He played here in June, which I noticed only when everything was completely sold out…

Building the bridge saying that snow maybe has maybe never been among Cave’s preferred substances, I think the video below illustrates well what you describe.

That is a lovely photo Nicole, but it’s too early for snow! We’ve had snow in the forecast a couple of times so far, including for today, but no actual snow so far. I’d be quite happy if the snow doesn’t come until a few days before Christmas. Last year we had the first green (brown) Christmas in a long long long time!

Terrific Snowy White tune Rogier. The other one with the 7 vertically challenged guys (see how pc I am!)
was great too. Never heard it in Dutch before.

Thank you…I just wanted to let you know that I felt a serious twinge in my back from laughing :joy:

Nanook of the North before breakfast? Is that even legal? Zappa is a genius!

It is a bit early, true - and looking a the weather forecast, the snow will melt away again quite soon. I wouldn’t mind if it stayed a bit then days until around winter solstice with wouldn’t be that dark…

Funny that you call it green (brown) Christmas. Here Christmas without snow is called “musta joulu” = black Christmas :snowflake:

Hi Nicole…

People often think of this as a Christmas song but it’s actually a song about a Winter romance…
my offering:

Stay warm!!!

Hey Nicole if you cant find a snowy song why not write one its just a poem set to music use Justin's dice method in the key of C heres a starter

“The early morning snow lies sparkling on the ground a sky so blue my thoughts turn to you” a bit corny I know you already have the title ,the first snow is the sweetest

Good idea, John @Guitarman63 , especially since I already shamelessly took inspiration for the title of this thread from “First cut is the deepest”

Dice song writing is not my cup of tea though, it’s too arbitrary for me. Currently , I’m very busy over there working on a different song with a group of other beginner songwriters (Anyone in for a beginner songwriting challenge?), but I’ll absolutely keep the DIY-song suggestion in mind

@CATMAN62 : Noooooooooo…not yet another earworm song :laughing: :face_with_spiral_eyes: :woozy_face: :laughing:

I thought the title sounded familiar

Hi Nicole

Lovely thread … managed to get me to post something rather than mostly silently witness this extraordinary community
This is one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite artists. Canada’s own Julie Doiren.
It is kind of an ode to snow. Julie is at heart an Indie Rocker but many of her Solo Records have really sweet songs of domestic observation like this one. It is easy enough to play on guitar you can really get lost in the chord progression.

Lyrics

When the snow falls this November
It’s such a great place to be
And when the snow falls this November
I see you and me
Open the dark curtain
The sky’s just getting light
We stay right where we are
All the way till tonight

Through the window
We watch the snow
Kids walking in snowpants
We don’t go nowhere
Not today, not tonight

Won’t tie up my hair
Won’t get dressed too
I’ll just stay here next to you
We don’t go nowhere
Let the baby sleep
Let the dogs rest too

Through the window
We watch the show
Kids walking in snowpants
We don’t go nowhere
Not today not tonight

Happy winter every one

I like old stuff like this… Dean Martin

Certainly, in Canada, they have more songs about snow and winter than this…
Robert Charlebois, star in the 60s (and later)
“Tomorrow - winter… I leave you, I’ll go into the sun…”

Another later version of the same.
