Fractured wrist - has anyone suffered this? How long before you resumed guitar?

I had just started level 2 after enjoying starting to play guitar at 66 when I fell and fractured my left, fretting wrist. 6 weeks on and I wondered when people started trying to play again. Will get wrist brace off next week and hope to continue learning :crossed_fingers:

Dang! That sucks. I have yet to have that experience. I hope you heal quickly and well.

A lot probably depends on how badly it is broken. But certainly as long as you are in the cast and the longer you are in it the stiffer your wrist will be.

Take the post cast therapy seriously. The guitar may be good therapy as well. Just start gently.

Meanwhile, maybe a good time to try slide guitar?

Try to get advice from Physiotherapist and / or Occupational Therapist, either from the hospital or your GP practice. I hope you’re back playing soon.

Hi Linda, I’m also in my 60” s and broke my left wrist 5th August 2024 a distal radial fracture. Fortunately, it was a clean break and didn’t require surgery. My cast came off at the end of September and I started by playing for 5 minutes at a time several times a day and gradually increased the amount of time as my wrist began to feel more limber, I unfailingly did all of the rehab exercises given to me by the fracture clinic before I picked up the guitar and I also purchased a gyroscopic powerball which helped me with wrist strength and mobility it was easy to use and was recommended to me by a physiotherapist friend. It was roughly about the 3 – 4-month mark after the break that I began to feel my playing was back to where I’d left off. I still use the powerball to maintain wrist strength/mobility and always warm up before touching my guitars (something I was neglectful of prior to the break). You’ll get good advice from the fracture clinic, and you’ll know yourself if something doesn’t feel right, don’t push yourself too hard slow and steady is better and before you know it you’ll be progressing again. Good luck

thank you, thats so helpful. I had a bad break and have a metal splint and screws inside. I will ask at the fracture clinic when i go on wednesday for the 6 week xray. i’ll definitely get the powerball too. Thanks for the other answers too. In Glasgow, Uk personal physio/ot isn’t provided unless you aren’t doing well with self directed/online physio after 12 weeks.
