Freight Train - fingerstyle with thumbpick

Hey there,

I would like to share with you my newest “skill” and that is learning Freight Train which recommended Joe Robinson last year in club session.
I just got in my fingers whole song and now I am gonna polish that so it sound even better. Also when I record it is much harder for me to play anything… that is my problem.

By this I would like to thank to Justin, teachers and community, because when I started with guitar I could not do anything… and all basics and knowledge comes primary from Justin Guitar.

Also I would like to motivate you all, that everything is possible. Can you imagine this is played by guy who could not hold D chord?

Sounded great, Michal, well done. That thumb was super steady, and thumped delightfully due to your good muting of the strings.

@DavidP Thank you very much for your time looking at it. It means really much from Approved teacher/Community modererator.
You spend here big time and “you know”.

@MollyT Thank you very much. I cant wait what I would be able to do with this chord progression and pattern… like Tommy Emmanuel plays variations on this. One day.

Good job. I’ve been working on that song for the past three weeks and I’m not near that far along. The coordination of the “boom chick” (thumb) and playing the melody with the fingers makes me feel like I have three feet, no hands and zero coordination. Keep it up. Playing like that is no easy task.

@DerekLHall can I ask you how do you learn it? I really recommend Joe Robinson JG club session where he teaches you thumb independance in easy chord progression. Then you go for Freight Train chord progression, but THUMB only. After some time you can start working on phrases and just connecting them. This is what worked for me.
Break it to parts. Also break it to thumb only.

I have a guitar teacher that I take from every Wednesday. He’s an old guy like me, but he can play any stringed instrument. The steps you describe are the exact steps he is taking me through. We initially looked at the melody. We are currently working on thumb only. I tried yesterday to put it all together and realize I still have a long way to go. Thanks for the tips.

PS…he’s huge on getting the chord change timing down to a T. We have spent a good deal of time with timing issues alone.

@DerekLHall great to hear that. So it just needs time and patience.
I am gonna be honest… I knew something from Paul Davids in fingerstyle before I went this Tommy Emmanuel/Joe Robinson style, so it took me around 5-6 weeks to get there… but I cant give you exact time, because there were sessions I was watching Stranger Things and just drilling that independance.:blush:

I have downloaded and started working on the Joe Robinson finger style that Justin had on his channel.

Really good Michal. You’ve really got the independent thumb thing down. Well done.
Its a technique that I keep promising myself I’ll work on but I find it very difficult.

Hi Michal
That already sounds really good. Palm muting and is spot on and it is great to see you working with a thumb pick. Is that the one you 3d printed.

Very good Michal, you’re doing really well especially with the thumb picked part and palm muting. I thought that maybe your melody could have been a bit louder, but what I heard was nicely played, it’s just the matter of getting the dynamics right now you can play the notes accurately.

NOICE!

Well done indeed. You got that baseline plugging along–you also picked a song on my “someday, hopefully not to far away” list!

Very nicely done - consistent timing, great muting technique, I tried this combination myself and found it really hard - you nailed it!

@Will_E_Vander Man… how you know. I am shocked someone remember this. Great! But actually not… this one is Black Mountain thumb pick. Thank you.

@DarrellW You got great ears… this is something I found day one that needs to be trained to be avoided. Because even when I do palm mute for TOP three lower strings… it is still louder than melody notes. But how you said. It is question about dynamics and my goal now was get song into fingers and now I can start working on overall dynamics.

Exactly, and I sort of half wonder if you played the bass line with your thumb rather than the pick it would make it easier to get the right balance. I have never got on with thumb picks for that reason, they always sound too harsh for me.
