Für Elise (simplified)

I have officially been playing the guitar for months now.
It may not seem like much, but as someone who had genuine worries I am tone deaf, I am immensely proud of myself.

Good effort. The guitar does sound out of tune in parts though. This could be the way you are fretting the notes, possibly pressing down too much.
Keep going you are doing well.

I didn’t know pressing too hard could change the note ! I often do that when trying to record because attention is spooky.
Would you mind please telling me where exactly so I can see if I can work on that. I hear some buzzing sometimes but my ear isn’t good enough to spot the out of tune part.
Thanks for the feedback

Med

Beautiful tone from your guitar: your fretting the notes really well. A very good rendition of a lovely melody. You might want to try alternate picking - thumb for the lower three strings, index, middle and ring fingers for G, B and E - which can improve the balance between lower and higher notes. A very good performance,

Brian

I’m happy to read you’re immensely proud of yourself Med because you have many reasons to be! Your effort was really good…what?! Only months in?! You’re going to find out more and more along the way about techniques such as alternated picking which Brian @beejay56 is mentioning.

This is the first classical piece I learnt on guitar, then Brahms 'Lullaby and then I decided to dive into Classical Guitar and started structured studies…so when I read the title I was :heart_eyes::smiling_face_with_three_hearts::heart_eyes:

Thanks a lot for sharing it and…No, you’re not tone-deaf…I’m sure you know it :blush:

Coming along nicely Med. My suggestion would be to try playing with a metronome. Your timing varies a bit throughout the piece and the metronome will help with that.
I think the bit @Malz means is around the halfway point when you go up the neck to play.
Overall though I thought the piece was well played. Well done.

@beejay56 Thank you so much, that means a lot.
And yes I should learn proper alternate picking.
@Silvia80 Thank youuuu, that’s so sweet of you. I have always loved Für Elise and always fantasized about being able to play it.
I don’t play classical that much but Für Elise and Spanish Romance (can only play the first easy part) sound so heavenly and I often play them not for practice but only to enjoy them.
@sairfingers Thanks a lot!
I was told that classical music changes in speed in playing (phrasing) so there’s that, but also there’s probably my incompetence at playing the harder part hihi.

This :backhand_index_pointing_up:t2: is why we play guitar… for the joy it brings!!! After all, if it’s not enjoyable enough to bring us happiness when we can play a song, why bother?

That being said, continue to work on your timing and finger “precision” to fret each note correctly! As you improve your technique over time, play it again while recording & prepare to be amazed at the difference!!! This was a really good effort but challenge yourself to make it better!!!

Good luck!

Hello Med,

I think you did really great job in such a short time of your learning. :slight_smile: Sounds good.

I am fingerstyle player, but not in classical way - I would still recommend to you check out therm “PIMA” and not playing melody lines with thumb. I am pretty sure those runs are played with “IM” where you can achieve much better speed and accuracy. I am telling you this in your early stage, so you dont get bad habit, but please let someone agree or not with me.

I am not classical player, but I think this is the way.

Here is short example of technique I am talking about.

Amazing job given you’ve only been playing for a short time

I’m not sure I’m hearing an out of tune part, but in the phrases where you play Eb E Eb E… etc, it might sound out of tune because the Ebs are ringing whilst the E is playing etc. I’m not familiar enough with the guitar versions of the tune to be sure, but maybe you’re supposed to only have one of these notes sounding at a time, so you have to be careful to mute the one that’s not sounding?

Really well played, and no, you’re not tone deaf :rofl:

You re talking about the Falling leaf arent you ?

the falling leaf: “think about when the leaf falls. There’s this little moment where the leaf stops before it kind of accelerates! So, it’s really quiet, and then it goes down and gets louder and faster. Then, it goes back up and soft, and it goes down, it gets louder, it gets softer.”

I think sairfingers is talking about legato here , its different

Hi Med, good effort, this was a practice piece of my son’s when he was working through the grades for UCAS points. You’ve played it quite nicely but I agree that you could benefit from looking at playing with a metronome to tighten it up

That’s very good for only a few months. Your practice is really paying off.
Looking forward to hearing what’s next.

@CATMAN62 Indeed. Thank you.
And yes, I will keep working on my technique. I love that song so it will probably grow with me.

@Carreta Thanks a lot !
Yeah there was this PIMA thing in the PDF I was learning with, that I just pretended was not there hehe. I was too impatient to actually be able to play the song that I forgo proper technique on my right hand especially. I will get to it definitely, thank you!
Also, God that sounds gorgeous.

@roger_holland Thank you so much. I will keep at it, thank you for the encouragement.

@twistor59 Thank you I appreciate it. hmm I never thought about that. I heard about these droning notes thing and I thought I am supposed to make everything ring out. Will have to look more into it then, thank you.

@GrumpyMac Oh yeah you put it perfectly actually. Looked up Legato and I am definitely lacking there. And the falling leaf analogy is so nice and sooo fitting for Für Elise. Thank you

@Willsie Hope he did well. And yeah timing seems to be the common feedback. I need to work on that. Thank you!

@WayneR Thank you so much, and I am really excited to learn more.
