I would like to share with you my yesterday experience about Furch on tour in my country.
I am from Czech Republic living 20 minutes from Prague (capital city) and week ago czech guitar distributor “KytaryCZ” (Guitars Czech) invited me for upcomming Furch on tour event in their local shop. There were only 30 spots so I registered in and I got spot.
The event was yesterday and we met here with current CEO Petr Furch, who is son of Furch founder. It was interesting to hear history of Furch here and watching some of their process - all this things are available on YouTube or on their web if anyone wanna dig some deep informations.
We could see some resonation test on front guitar desk and we got little theory about how some under inlays are made and what are their meaning - really interesting to see how guitar works and how much they have figure out.
There was Mr Furchs friend “Zdeněk Bína” (read it “Zdenek Beena”) who performed few short songs on Furch guitar and it sounded really good, he was using different fingerstyle mechanics with really strong attack or with slight attack - guitar sounded great and there was no buzz.
We also was able to try their guitars - for me it was little jane and its pretty good, but something happened and thats…
New guitar annoucement - its Furch Pioneer-SM. Its size is similar like little jane and its parlor. It has their newest technology - Booster Soundhole on side. I really like this little guitar. Now its on the way to supliers and soon will be on web site. It also have active new CNR Active system, which mean there is with carbon inlay also little adjustable wood block that react to humidity same as desk under saddle, so it wont affect your action too bad in big humidity area. Please check their web if you are interested, I may not be 100% correct in describing this technology, but its something that they have patented and cant be copied.
Sorry but I cant find way to share videos direct here. Also I would like to mention we were first guitarist yesterday that were introduced to Furch Pioneer and now its you who knows it exists too!
@JackPK This was event on local guitar store, never been to factory too, but this was little look inside. Where are you from? Maybe your country guitars have tours. Furch offers for not much money tour through their factory with commentary. Thinking about I will go one day. Even when I know “a lot” about their process.
I really recommend this Furch tour video on YouTube with music from Bedřich Smetana - czech musician in 18th century.
@Carreta Thanks for sharing this video, very interesting and informative. It shows perfectly how much care and precision is required to make such an instrument.
I’m from Warsaw, Poland and the only places in Czechia I’ve already visited are Adršpach and Harrachov. Now that I am retired and have a lot of time I will try to find some information about this factory and the possibility of visiting it.
@JackPK Cool, I am sending you links below. For one person its 175 zlotych.
Also I know about Slovakia guitar brand “Dowina”, but I dont know their brand or if they are making tours in factory. Maybe check that if its closer to you from Poland, idk where you live.
I know this brand because I saw podcast where was Furch CEO and Dowina CEO.
That was a very interesting read, thanks for sharing your experience and the photos Michal! I’m in Prague once in a while, but I have never been in a guitar shop in the Czech Republic yet. However, a local guitar shop here in Nuremberg have Furch guitars, and I even had one in my hands, a couple of months ago. The new guitar model seems to be a nice alternative for the Taylor GS mini. My urge for acquiring a new guitar is satisfied though… for now - listen to my words
I actually mean “BTM Guitars”, and for me this is/was THE guitar shop. They have excellent service, and quite some guitars on stock from lesser known manufacturers. They offer quite a variety of Furch models. Unfortunately they close down by the end of the year, because the owners were not able to find a successor. What a shame, but…
…I have to admit, I’m still spoiled in that respect
@franzek Dear Franzek, I wish you a good time in Prague.
I can really recommend to you guitar store where I was and they have lot of Furch guitars here… also many other brands. Acoustic, electric… and many different sections like drums and keyboard. If you really looking for bigger place to have a look you can check map location below.
I think there should not be problem to get here by any transport, but if you struggle with that I could have a little look. Still think you will figure out.
Also about that alternative to Taylor… I think this is really hard to judge, because Furch is making everything solid and they produce “only” 9 000 guitars per year. I think their quality is much much bigger than anything in low range in Martin and Taylor. In Taylor we all know there are productions in Mexico and USA and Mexico is almost everything below 2 000 dollars.
When I was on this event I had free time to play around… and again I found really bad things on Taylor and Martins. This Taylor academy something… around 750 dollars? Cant remember, did not have properly set frets. I dont really wanna pay this much money for this, that wont happen in Furch.
Then this Martin around 1800 dollars? I could see gap between neck and body, in good angle you could see light through. Hard to make photo, but do you really want this for this much money? That its not solid wood for this much is another topic…
I am not saying all of them are bad, but company making them in massive process like its candy producer… is really seeable on many of them.
Hello Michal.
Thanks a lot for the Prague guitar shop recommendation and for the google maps link. I checked out transportation, and it seems from Karlin I can use a Tram non-stop to the shop. Very convenient, I’ll check it out if time allows the next time I’m there.
Your photo’s about the Martin and the Taylor guitar, that looks weird. I totally agree with you on on the quality of Furch guitars. From what I have been told in our local guitar shop, their craftsmanship and wood choices really seems to be exceptional, and at the same time the prices are still reasonable compared to solid wood models from larger brands. I’m much aware and apreciate that Furch guitars are handmade, with only some help of machines. My comment was more about the form factor, about the body size and the scale length.
