It’s been way too long since I recorded a cover song. Been super busy with work, the band, working on my technique etc etc. BUT - it’s important to learn and play songs all the way through, and I always wanted to learn this one. It’s surprisingly hard to find a decent backing track for Gary Moore rock songs, and this one isn’t perfect either. Got the stems to play over from Karaoke-Version.com, and since I felt this one really needed vocals… I hope you’ll enjoy (or suffer through) “Don Gary” as he’s belting out the song, as best as he can. Accent is strong on this one!
Anyway - I stayed somewhat close to the original, but also added quite a few small layers and parts of my own. Solo is inspired from a live version from 1987, not the album one. Outro solo contains a lot of my own stuff as well.
Hope you’ll enjoy it!
And, as usual, I also uploaded a “guitars only” render so you can clearly hear what I decided to go with regarding tones and parts:
Thanks for checking it out!
Gary was one of my first heroes, and he’s been a big influence and inspiration for how I play. Love his rock and early blues stuff the most. Amazing tone, touch and fiery phrasing!
Kasper,
Good to see a post from you and a fine one indeed. Love the tones and play too. I thought this might be a take off on the Zep song going by the same name. As such I never heard this version. Good stuff!
Instantly back in the 6th form.
I read somewhere Gary wasn’t too fond of his rock stuff in his later years - I always liked it. I remember hearing End of The world for the first time and the intro blew me away. Loved his stuff ever since. Still don’t think he truly gets the credit he deserves outside of guitar circles. Even the pathetic rag Rolling Stone failed to have him in their top 250 guitarist of all time. Sorry - I digress.
This was brill, as always. Great to hear some classic Moore.
Now bite the bullet and cover his cover of The Messiah Will Come Again - the live version from Montreux 1990.
Digger
Yeah, I also heard that Gary at some point became tired of his rock stuff… good for him, that he found his passion for the blues. I like both parts of his career
As for “The Messiah Will Come Again” - love that track, and would not dismiss attempting it at some point. BUT - that particular live version is so incredibly mind blowing good that it’s a scary thought even to attempt the song. I think I would go for “my own version”
