G'day from Cairns Australia

I always get a bit of stage fright with these introductions, but here goes.

Originally from Belgium, I’ve been calling Australia home for the past 27 years. Like John Miles once said, “Music was my first love” and that was certainly true for me as a teenager growing up in the '80s. My love for guitar started with bands like Iron Maiden, but the guitarist who has had the biggest and most lasting impact on me is Mike Oldfield. Even now, I still listen to his work frequently, in my opinion, his guitar skills and his talent on multiple instrument are truly in a league of their own.

I’m almost 54 now, and that’s probably my biggest hesitation in picking up the guitar again. I first got one when I turned 30, but unfortunately shortly after I was going through a rough patch in life and lost interest in many things including guitar, it’s one of my biggest regrets. Ironically, even back then I thought I was “too old” to learn guitar, duh! :man_facepalming:

I still second guess myself and worry this might be a waste of time and money but at the same time the fact that I never properly learned guitar has haunted me for over 20 years. I don’t think a career change is on the cards but nothing ventured, nothing gained and with age you do grow a bit more mellow and I’ll be happy to simply enjoy getting that little bit better over time… hopefully.

Even though I love the acoustic I finally got my Strat delivered last week. Living up here in far north Queensland aka the boonies means limited options in stores when it comes to variety and choice.
And I’ll admit it: I’m a bit shallow when it comes to aesthetics. I need to love how a guitar looks to feel inspired to play it. For me, that means a Strat has to be sparkling white, no exceptions !

Even though I work in IT I’m still impressed as to how far technology has come. With a Spark Mini amp and the companion app on my phone, I can still dial in that acoustic-style tone I enjoy so much. The only surprise there is that this Strat is a lot heavier than I expected but I digress.

Messing around today and going through the A and D chords in Justin’s videos was genuinely fun. Competing against yourself, rather than comparing to others will definitely be essential when it comes to staying motivated as far as I’m concerned. The “I suck, just give up” frame of mind is always there. :face_with_monocle:

And to quote another great guitarist there you have it, my “boring story of glory days.” (if you know you know lol)

Good day Stefaan. You have found the right place to create some glory days! I’d say you qualify as a Justin Guitar “Old Dawg” so here’s where you can read the stories of people who picked up a guitar in their 50s, 60s and 70s (I turn 67 this week) and are having the time of their lives. Enjoy your first love!

Thanks everyone for making me feel welcome. Did my first proper practice today and although I didn’t quite play until my fingers bled but they are certainly hurting! Might have to do some practice with light fingers just to help the muscle memory at least as that D chord is a tough one to get right without muting that first string.

Hi Stefaan, I am happy that you have joined the best guitar community here.

We are almost the same age and share a love of music. I rediscovered the guitar last year at almost 54 and first tried SimplyGuitar but was a bit disappointed. Then I found JustinGuitar and this is where I want to enjoy the journey. The structured content and the great community guarantee you progress as long as you enjoy music. No one will rush you through the modules. Take your time and enjoy learning the songs for each module, this was the best tip for me. Sometimes is the motivation for exercises a bit down, then I simply pick up the guitar and play a song, so the joy always stays alive. It’s the same for all of us, the “glory days” will pass us by and it’s the song that stay to tell a story

Have always fun with your guitar, greetings from Germany
Withold

Hey Stefaan, welcome to the forum, great to hear from another Aussie. A few of us around here.

Similar to you, I started playing guitar (acoustic) at the age of 53 after an aborted attempt some years earlier. And I’m so glad I started with Justin. Don’t worry if you feel you are too old, you’ll never be younger than you are today ever again.

The cool thing is the reward, once you learn a song or two, is just fantastic. I’m still playing and loving the guitar some 13 years later for me, this morning, when I got up, I was playing for close to 2 hours. Once you get the bug, it never goes away. Look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi fellow Belgian!

This is one of my checks that needs to be done when going through a ‘will I buy this guitar’ checklist: there needs to be LOVE for how it looks. So yeah, nothing wrong with that. I follow that sentiment, that not only feel but also looks inspire you to grab it and plat it!

Welcome!
