Genesis: Firth of Fifth Solo; Steve Hackett "The Steppes"

@oldhead49 @Gonetoearth Thanks folks!

Yes, I’m a follower of Justin’s advice to transcribe as much as possible. In this case I had to work out the drums, bass and keyboards too, so it took quite a while!

Well that was awesome. Its possibly my favourite Genesis song. I really enjoyed this.

Definitely one of mine too - lots of dynamics, some great Tony Banks keyboard work, and some clever lyrics. I wish I was able to play it all!

Both pieces beautifully put together Phil.

Just listened to both of these back to back-
You not only have the coolest toys, but the chops to squeeze the goodness out of them :open_mouth:
My hovercraft is full of eels again! :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

@liaty Thanks Dave! Really enjoyed your “Shine on” at the last OM, complete with light show.

@brianlarsen Well, you were asking about the sustainiac in another thread, which I was promising to demo. Your eel-laden hovercraft violates fishing quotas :rofl:

Brilliant solo, Phil!
What cool vibratos! And I’m sure you could have played just as well without such a wonderful pickup :wink: Btw, this is the first I’ve heard of it :thinking:
The whole mix is perfectly done, thanks for sharing.

Awesome playing, Phil. Simply wow :scream::star_struck::clap::clap::clap:! Bringing all those instruments and effects together in such harmony, is an art of its own. Both pieces are highly enjoyable :smiling_face:.
Thanks a lot for sharing these gems :hugs:.

Settle down, Phil! Things are getting out of hand! :flushed::sweat_smile:
Haha nah seriously they were both OUTSTANDING! :clap::clap::clap::astonished: As always your playing and tone were superb! And to read you transcribed both pieces, as well as other instruments, is just WOW! You never fail to impress, absolutely fantastic all round, including production and mixing. Blown away mate! 🫨 :smiley::+1:

@crocodile1 @NicoleKKB @nzmetal

Thanks for the encouragement folks! The multi-instrument stuff definitely makes you listen a lot more closely to the tracks and how they’re arranged.

Hi Phil,
Took in both videos and I must say it was tasty stuff. Nice play and I liked the new pup. It whales and has some soaring tones to it. I also took a shine to your keys work. That is quite a pedal setup you have for the keyboard. What is it and what name does it have? Is it generic, or specific to KB brand or model? I just got a keyboard and might be into adding that to mine if possible.

At any rate, good stuff all the way around!

Take care,
LB

Thanks LB! Yeah, I’m very happy with the sustainiac, and the battery hasn’t run out yet!

The bass pedals I’m using are Studiologic MP113. They’re just midi pedals so don’t make any noise themselves, just note-on note-off etc. The noise for them is made by a Moog Minitaur, which is a small analog bass synth, based on the old Moog Taurus bass pedal setup which was used a lot by Genesis, Rush etc.

On The Steppes track, there is also a fretless bass sound which I played on the keyboard, but it’s mostly buried under the bass drone from the Minitaur!
