Get ready for the Summer community AVOYP!

Hello folks

Are you ready to take your guitar and play around a campfire ?

Well here is our community campfire waiting to be ignited

its time to get ready to play summer songs !

The goal would be to spend a good time together and share our AVOYPs under one topic

the theme is : SUMMER

so all songs shared in the topic should be related to the theme

What does Summer mean to you ? What song comes to your mind ?

The topic will run from the beginning of July to the end of August so you have 2 to 4 months to get ready and participate

You can share any type of songs , traditional songs from your countries , pop , rock , metal , etc , as long as it is in the theme
You can play on an electric , an acoustic , a uke , … anything !

Even kid’s songs are allowed

Dont be shy if you’re a beginner, all levels are welcome !!!

Wow, Deborah, that’s quite a lot of suggestions to give people some ideas. Thanks for listing all of those.

Mine would be “Here comes the summer” by the Undertones, or “Rockaway Beach” by the Ramones, but unfortunately I’m unlikely to play them anytime soon as I have a wrist injury that prevents me from strumming. It has forced me to learn a bit of finger style though - which is no bad thing. So perhaps I can try and choose one that will work well finger style (probably not the Undertones or Ramones though in that case).

Great idea !!!

Best, Ian

p.s. as I was born in Teeside (NE England) very near to where Chris Rea comes from, I just love the song On the Beach, although for many reasons another Chris Rea song Stainsby Girls is one of my favourite songs.

if you want to play a finger style maybe @MollyT can help you find a song

Ok ok Deborah @GrumpyMac and Ian @Prof_Thunder here are some suggestions. Anything with summer or sunshine in the song title and fingerpicked (or fingerpickable).

First up the claaaassic “You are my sunshine” - many versions out there, fingerpicked in connection with Mississippi John Hurt, but here is a nice version that has tab on the screen and does not look too hard.

“A Summer song” by Chad and Jeremy: comes up when you type in summer song to google. Never heard of before but was apparently very popular and covered by everyone under the sun. Two guitars, one flatpicked the second fingerpicked, will sound nice fingerpicked on just one guitar. Here they are on TV in the 60es and here is a more recent performance in a radio station.

“Cover me in Sunshine” by P!NK - what a lovely song, I think I’ll add that to my repertoire list, the verse is fingerpicked using easy patterns and the chorus is finger-strummed, so no pick required. There is a good guitar tutorial out there as well.

Townes van Zandt - Like a summer Thursday - there is a good tutorial out there as well

“Don’t let the sunshine fool ya” - lyrics written by Guy Clark and music by Townes; less melancholic than the summer Thursday. Both recorded it but only Townes’ version is fingerpicked. Looove this song, and here is an unlisted video of me playing it.

Then there is “Summer wages” written by Ian Tyson, here a TV performance (no pick!) also widely covered. Special mention to Colter Wall’s version as it is so cool. Or a live performance by Steve Earl who is not a great fingerpicker, so what he does is easy stuff = achievable by July.

Or Gordon Lightfoot “Summertime dream”. This was recorded strummed and he seems to have played it on a 12-string at least in this TV performance, but the strumming can easily be switched with some folk-fingerstyle patterns. Will probably sound better anyway.

Happy to help anyone who is going to learn any of these and has fingerpicking questions. Just tag me.

And I’ll be contributing “Bonfire” to the party when it starts :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: I can almost play it now.

Thanks, Deborah, for the announcement, what a lovely idea. I’d like to suggest adding School’s Out For Summer. I’m planning to work on Summer Wine, let’s see if I stick with it

Thank you Deborah for this fun initiative! What I liked the most with the Christmas thread was that it brought together learners of different levels and different genres as well…and I really hope it’ll be the same with this one! I’m pretty sure I wil take part but I’m still not sure how… I hope to take this as a good chance for me to challenge myself with strumming.

Molly

A great list of summer songs and a super cover of ‘Don’t Let The Sunshine Fool Ya’. The Pink song is wonderful: like a couple of others you’ve chosen, I’d never heard it before.

This is a great idea Deborah! Thanks for arranging it and the announcement
I’d like to try to participate with a song, there are so many good suggestions here
I practiced a song for the Christmas theme community AVOYP but every time I pressed the record button my fingers refused to work properly. :grimacing: So I’ll see how I go this time  :joy:

I love this song! Look forward to hearing it

oooh no :frowning:

Dont put pressure on yourself , its all about sharing a good time together it doesnt have to be perfect

maybe you can try recording all your practice sessions or some of them , to get used to it

Come on I d love to see an AVOYP from you even if its only a third of a song or even a sentence

@Silvia80 I agree :slight_smile:
What I like also is to go outside my comfort zone thanks to the " theme “
I would never have thought of learning On the beach on my own
I like the song but it was not something I had on my list

Jasmine, Deborah suggested really well, recording while you’re practicing really helps to get used to the red button. Also take in mind that the listener doesn’t necessarly spot the mistakes if you can keep a good flow and just keep going.
Just take your time…you know you have many friendly supporters over here
Thank you for being a wonderful friendly supporter yourself!

Ok, I’ll do it this time. I’ll work on a song and practice with the recording too.
Thank you!! :folded_hands: :heart_exclamation: :sunflower:
