Can anyone explain the theory behind the tapping section of Bettencourt’s main solo?
Cheers.

Here’s a lesson on finger tapping. Justin’s doing a double tap but you can tap any note in the scale like the video you posted

Thanks, but my skepticism was inclined more toward the theoretical approach crafting these Bettencourt tapping sequences/ thingamajigs than technicality. :slightly_smiling_face:

Theoretical approach: start with any note within the scale you are using to solo with.
Hammer on, pull off, tap pull off, repeat. Don’t over think it it’s just another way to play notes and looks cool.
If you are soloing using the minor pentatonic scale any note in that scale on the same string will work. Try using out of scale notes for more color or interesting sounds. Keep the good ones don’t use the bad ones.

Watch Eddie Van Halen he’s the one who mastered tapping and made it popular.

I was about to comment, that this obviously younger individual needs a dose of Eddie Van Halen before the word skepticism and finger tapping on guitar are using in the same sentence.

No offense Didogeek

Oh, cool, then. I was wondering maybe Nuno was using a different pentatonic for e,x, the Dominant Pentatonic Scale for playing the tapping section, as the notes didn’t really fit the pentatonic boxes. Might’ve been I was overthinking it too much ‘‘THEORETICALLY’’ :joy:
Btw, I have been watching Eddie too, heh : )

Scales don’t have to be in boxes. You can play every scale on just 1 string.
Write down the notes of the A minor pentatonic scale then find all of them on the neck. You can use any of the to play in that scale. The patterns(boxes) are just tools to teach the scales on different spots on the neck. Feel free to mix them together.

A good exercise to help with tapping is to play the first 2 notes in one pattern with the fretting hand and find the next note of the next pattern with you other hand. Do this on each string.
