This song was suggested to me by YT - the first time I heard it it made me cry and I knew I had to learn it! Its also full of things I love - the Am to G change, my favourite chord change on the guitar ever - and lots of sus chords and a generous helping of embellishments everywhere. It took a while to get on top of the chord progression (Am|C|G|C|Am|F|C|G|Am|F|C|F|C|G and that’s just the verse … ) and get everything in place. It was one of the hardest songs to learn last year, so while I will continue to polish it over the next few months I wanted to take a video just to document where it is now.
Wow Molly bravo, what a great sounding song. and your finger picking I could only dream of
great work.
I’ll gladly second what Craig @CD02 said before me: your fingerstyle playing is very impressive, and so is your singing. The sound and recording quality is very good, too.
Congrats and best regards
Tomasz
Just wonderful Molly, great finger style, song and singin
Hi Molly,
That sound is amazing like the picking too

Greetings
Well done Molly. That’s a beautiful song. It’s great being able to play and sing songs that you enjoy.
Oh Molly, that was very special, thank you for posting. Brightened up a very dreary Devon Sunday morning.
Molly
Superb - particularly your very own Travis picking. A lovely song, beautifully performed.
Brian
Really nice Molly, very good finger picking with a lot of embellishment. You sang with feeling.
Thank you all so much for listening, liking and leaving such nice comments!
Thank you Erion @erionstrings it is the best! When that starts to happen all the hours of practise start to pay off, nothing better!
Thank you Craig @CD02 ! I have directed all my OCD tendencies towards it. Fingerstile is as learnable as any other guitar technique, but it seems to require more repetitions in practising. I consider myself lucky to have had the time for that over these last few years.
Thank you for saying that Thomasz @Coda ! One of the things I want to work on this year is producing better sound in the “Open Mic” setup where I sing into a directional microphone and the guitar sound comes through the sound system of the guitar. As everything it takes practise to know when to get closer to the microphone and when to move back …
Thank you so much Rogier @roger_holland ! The guitar sound is the Taylor sound system after a bit of fiddeling with the nobs to get the right mix between treble and base. In the end I slightly prefer recording on my zoom - it sounds even closer to what you would hear if you were in the room - but I need to get on top of using directional microphones for singing and then its better to use the guitar soundsystem.
Thank you so much John @JohnnyW ! So happy if I managed to brighten up your winter day!
Thank you so much Adrian @AJSki2fly ! It is a great song isn’t it - it blends beauty and sadness in equal measures.
Thank you Brian @beejay56
It means a lot to me!
Thank you John @Willsie I always try but it doesn’t always come across so it makes me happy that this time it does ![]()
That was really beautiful Molly - both your playing and the song in c#m. I’m getting better at fingerstyle than at playing with a pick, and enjoying it. Watching your posts shows where I’m aspiring to get, so keep improving and posting. Cheers!
Very nice. I apire to finger pick half as good as you do.
That was an awesome song Molly. I’m not very good at fingerpicking, so this is awesome in my eyes.
Excellent job. I too enjoy fingerpicking. Your performance is excellent!
Molly, I’m so impressed by all you have accomplished in your musical journey. Great talent. I always enjoy each of your performances. I’m not familiar with this song or artist, but it was beautiful! Well done.
Lovely picking! Been concentrating on this lately and have a long way to go. Thanks for sharing!
What a beautiful song Molly. Lovely vocal and terrific fingerstyle, embellishments and hammer-ons. Impressed by the thumb over F too. Well done.
It’s wonderful to see your effort and how deeply you’ve embraced… ![]()
Thank you so much Michael @mfeeney0110 ! Reach out if you have any fingerstile questions. I obviously don’t know everything but I am happy to share what I know and cheer you on!
Thank you so much Pam @pkboo3 ! I was also not familiar with Kate Wolf’s songs, I believe there was a time in the 60ies or 70ies when she was wider known but she is a forgotten artist now. I knew about her and that others have covered her songs, but never really listened to the originals until now. They are well worth checking out, I found a few more gems already and I have not listened to all of her songs yet.
Thank you so much Gordon @sairfingers ! yes, thumb over F - essential for hammering on the first fret of the second string (B to C) which is just such a heartstring-pulling sound (resolving a sharp F11? something like that), or the more conventional hammeron on the second fret third string (G to A - resolving Fsus2). In the chorus that then moves on to thumb-over D7 which is also hammered in on the second fret - took me a while to get those moves clean but they are so much fun to play!
And thank you so much Dean @dmisen, Kacey @KaseyPBC , Hans @Justh33 , Mike @MiJoy and Mas @MasBub for listening, liking and leaving encouraging comments! It makes it all worthwhile and so much more fun beyond just learning a new song!
Wow, Molly, that’s beautiful!
I don’t know the song but can see why you fell in love with it!
It’s very well performed too, amazing fingerpicking, smooth chord changes, great singing and lovely embellishments
