Hello everyone! I am John, turning 47 soon, in Connecticut in the USA. I have started and stopped playing guitar a few times over the years, but am feeling really good about being consistent now. Had undiagnosed ADHD for years which made it hard to stick with.
Not currently in a position to take in person lessons, which I have in the past and would love to again once I can make it work with my weird schedule. Until then, I will be going through Justin’s lessons. Love his YouTube channel and his style of explaining things.
Getting older, I am concerned about decline in mental cognition and manual dexterity,so thought guitar would be a great workout for both. Music is the great love of my life and playing guitar brings me a lot of joy. It is one of the only times I am kind and patient with myself!
I play both currently (also have a bass.) I primarily play my electric (an Epiphone es-339 p90 pro) but live my acoustic also (a Yamaha APX600FM.) I would like to get a solid body electric this Summer at some point.
Hey John, good to see you here.
Great your getting back into the “love of my life”. I get it. Music has been my only constant too.
As for this older business. I didn’t feel it much till a few years ago. Sitting around playing my guitar ain’t when I feel old either. You’ll be fine. I’m 66. Plenty of folks older than me here too. We’re all still getting on with learning to play.
Ya should be good for bit is what I’m saying.
JG is a great place to get on with playing too. Ya just learn at your own pace. There’s zero pressure. His lessons work for me. Plenty of other folks here it seems to work for too.
Most important. Keep it fun. As long as it’s fun, you’ll just keep moving forward, getting better and better.
Keep the excitement man!
Hey John, welcome to the community. I’m also from CT, there are a couple others I know of. Enjoy your guitar journey! I started at 51, so you’ve got four years on me haha. And there’s a lot of folks who started after retiring in their 60s… age brings it’s own challenges but trust Justin’s method and good things will surely follow!
Keep it FUN is kinda my mantra… the start/stop/start/stop thing is my guitar story in a nutshell. I would get bogged down with learning stuff that, although important, was a drudge to practice & set it aside for weeks or months… sometimes years!
Justin’s video lessons have been spot-on for me though… it’s been fun & inspiring to learn & play songs!!!
Best of luck to you along your guitar Journey!!!
Hello John,
greetings from someone who dares to start guitar playing with 69 years, as we say, you are never too old to start something new, mind you, I only started 3 days ago, so we will see how it goes on the long term.
Hello John.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. There a whole host of golden oldies over in the dog house.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
