I LIKED it! As a rank beginner it looked to me like everything you did was what was intended and sounded great. I read from your other replies that some things you meant to do you left out, etc. Again total newb here but from what little I know if it flows, sounds good, it is good! That was good, the fingers sometimes know better than the brain!…. Rod
“We’re on a mission from god” … the pursuit of playing the blues and bluesy rock 'n roll
His videos have been a helpful supplement to Justin’s Essential Blues Lead Guitar | JustinGuitar.com in particular the ‘Stealing from Clapton’ video which was the inspiration for my noodle.
Further to this it is an old Arabian tale of tragic unrequited love, Layla and Majnun - Wikipedia, which Clapton enjoyed and related to back in the day, having fallen for Patti, George’s wife.
Fabulous tone, great job on the BT, and a most enjoyable noodle.
I liked the notes added to the minor pentatonic from the chords of the BT, the phrasing, bends, repetition of a couple of notes, motif (a recurring pattern of notes designed to build some tension).
Keep on rocking, my friend
Now I’m thinking that your BT is of such quality and this has become a bit of a thing, that maybe worth creating a Guitar Challenge Topic with your BT shared for all to download (I feel safe in assuming you’d be cool with that). I think it is an ideal vehicle for all those who have taken the first steps into lead play by learning the minor pentatonic in position 1. Justin teaches it in the key of A. But I think a helpful exercise to explore applying it over this BT that can be done in position 1 D minor, so root note at the 10th fret E string.
What do you think @Richard_close2u?
I’m back here before Toby, so will take the liberty of answering.
I’m David aka @DavidP
Gordon is known as @sairfingers here. It’s a Scottish thing from a poem by Robbie Burns about sore fingers, no need to say more
Rick aka @stitch is a long time member who has been playing guitar from before the time I became tuned into rock 'n roll and the blues let alone picked up the guitar for the first time. He has been posting helpful answers to those of us asking questions here ever since I’ve been a member.
Nicely done @TheMadman_tobyjenner nice playing and great to see a bit of vibrato here and there!
Good to see you resolving at the ends of the phrases, it makes all of the difference. It’s one where I found myself predicting where you were going next, sometimes getting it wrong but that’s the thing with improvisation, we don’t all hear the same thing!
Certainly on a mission and its great to see you and Gordon really making good progress.
I remember this from back in the days when the original “Derek” was released but there seemed to be a lot of that thing going around at the time. But hey they all led to some great records.
So now you get what @Stitch was saying about adding colour and those extra intervals outside that “main” box and a touch of Albert and BB. And again personally that’s all down to prep work before hand. Listening to the original, then the BT and planning what will work and which notes/intervals to go to. That doesn’t mean then going and playing it like following some tab but visualising the what and where before hand. So I’ll map things out using the NeckDiagram program because I am the first to admit, I am still working on getting this all into my head, so my hands just know where to go. So for general jams or impros I’d just mess with the scale but this one called for a map.
Yeah looks like some weird science formula but as you can see, its laid out in intervals.
Core pent is the one you mention, E shape D minor at the 10th fret. The lines link the Dm chord tones but the other chord root are represented. Now match this up with @Richard_close2u 3rds n Thirds diads/dyads (?) and you’ll see familiar usable shapes.
Don’t expect you to follow it but just explaining my process. One day I’ll figure this all out on the fretboard but it helps for now.
I’m in two minds about the tone, it was a little too mellow but for some reason the Mustang failed to load half a dozen pre-sets which it does now and then. I quickly reinstalled this one but it was the untweaked version and needed more mids and treble. After the “failure” Thursday evening I just left it and went for it.
As to the Guitar Challenge, that was in the back of my mind and one of the reason for not posting as another MDC. The BT is 10 minutes long and great for experimenting with but I could render the shorter version and drop on the cloud somewhere, if this goes forward ?
Thanks for the feedback.
Back to Justin’s Essential Blues Lead, one of the things he advocates is using different Keys. Although he teaches EBL around the A minor pentatonic, he always stressing doing this. There are loads of backing tracks out there, so I’d encourage anyone who is comfy with their A minor pent to try just about any Key that you can. As David said initially moving from A to D felt a bit odd but its a great way of getting used to playing all over the neck. The key is knowing the 6 note root to root pattern, once you have that you can start anywhere on the neck on any note and launch from there.
Thanks for the neck diagram, Toby. For now, I shall avoid info overload and stick to position 1, AK’s box, and some added notes.
let’s see what Richard has to say re a Layla-based GC topic. If we go ahead, I think a cut back BT to sub 3 minutes would make sense.
That sounded cool!
It looks so meditative too play around with a looper and soloing over it like you did.
( The more im in this forum the more i want too learn electric guitar )
And so it starts, Trond, the itch, the urge, the GAS pressure will build. Accept that it is no longer if but when
I know i have this tiny tiny itching sensation about it now. Just know its going to turn into a serious hunger down the road
Damn, that Layla is a bed hopper!
That was great Toby. I liked the way you moved around the neck and will be studying your moves, but I have to confess your neck diagram map sent me into a tail spin!
One if the reasons I’ve being playing my version on acoustic is to take the tone issue out the equation. One less thing to think about!
@DavidP Thanks for the explanation of the term ‘motif’. I’ve been meaning to ask @stitch about that one.
And before any Burns enthusiasts wade in, Rabbie didn’t write about sore fingers. What I said sometime in the past was that if he had he would have pronounced it ‘sairfingers’.
Ha it could have been me missing the turning and not you ! Appreciate the feedback, it made a change to noodle/impro with a concept (song) in mind, rather than randomly run around the scale but that is the point of the exercise and a method I’ll use on other more random jams.
Classical Gas and nothing to do with Mason Williams!
Thanks for the comments Trond but I confess the loop is a backing track from Now You Shred but now I have my Trio I’ll attempting to build loops like this once I get the hang of it. But I suspect they will be of a lower quality ! Thanks for listening.
Thank you Tracey, glad you liked it.
Gordon
Yep she gets around a bit ! Hopefully, you and David will get to visit other places soon as well.
And don’t worry about the diagram, it was purely illustrative of my current process. I am beginning to either see or work things out in my head but find this approach helps for now but I don’t want it to become crutch. They’re quick to create and sometimes just seeing things laid out, ushers an Aha moment and after that I don’t use it.
I’ll try and jot these down for you guys later, as they can be played off any root (D). The turnaround with the quick Am C Dm is the intervals 5 b7 R but I need to think about others.
But they are extensions of those three intervals so feel free to experiment.
Cheers
Toby
Hahaha… had too google Mason Wiiliams. Got it
Thanks for correcting my aging and failing memory, Gordon
I thought that was great, Toby, really delivered on the flavour of the song.
From the first note I thought the tone was perfect!
I might jump onboard with that Backing Track
Thank you Mari, some odd personal touches yes but tried to find something in keeping with the OT but at this stage not a carbon copy. As to tone, guess its down to personal choice and to me there was a bit of bite missing.
As to the BT knock yourself out, be good to here you jamming over this.
Backing Track Dm Bb C Dm (Am C) From Now YOU Shred
At least you can noodle, regardless of an imminent Guitar Challenge (that’s the 10 minute version).
Thanks I will check that out.
Remind me how you (or others) download YouTube to your computer? I’m leery of getting a virus so I usually just mic record it, which doesn’t have the best sound.
Mari
I use this https://snapdownloader.com/ which runs on Windows, down loads about 95% of YT content. Files can be saved in any format audio or video. I’ll trim them in Reaper with some editing cutting out repeat loops. Usual snipping the outro section and adding to the end of a similar bar around the 2:00 or 2:30 mark but can be a bit fiddly lining up. If I am not planning to record I’ll jam over the whole track, some are 17 minutes ! In-A-Gadda-Davida territory !
