Guitar Challenge (Improv) - Layla style Backing Tracks

Tell me about it ! I don’t want to shred ever but its oh so tempting to just dive into the slightest void I detect. Its hard work reigning back but worth it. You were definitely hanging on the roots, so try counting 2 3 4 with the beat while practicing. The numbers will stop it feeling like eternity. Its like when you think about an answer to a question, you think your taking ages to respond but to the listener its just a little and natural pause.

Count and play at the same time :rofl: Good idea Toby.

So true

I’ve heard you sing and play occasionally ? Sorry I am not sounding eggs and grannies am I ?
:older_woman: :egg: :hocho:

David

Just dropped on this BT and immediately thought of you. Keef not Clappers.

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek, but also my singing can be … erm … a little creative in phrasing and timing along with melody :laughing:

Got me on that one, Toby.

Just sounds so cool. Keef is special. And I saw on the video mention of mixo … right up your alley.

Relating to the saying “teaching your grandmother to suck eggs” telling someone something they already know.

As the BTs sadly just one Mixo in that “list” but others elsewhere I am filling the PC up with a selection, then off to JamHQ for some more Swampy SR as I’ve a need for something different. :wink:

Oops misread that, the Keef style BT is mixo ? Bring it on !!

Great stuff David. We are definitely maybe improving! Layla just doesn’t know which way to turn. The rest of the Community will never want to listen to her again! :joy:

Thanks Gordon. We just got to keep getting out on the dance floor :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

There’s plenty Layla to go around. I think Mari might be getting set to take her for a spin.

@DavidP the only thing I’ll add to what Toby said is
Start your solo lower on the neck or lower in the pattern.
When you start in the higher note you have no place to
go but down. Going down brings the listener down.

If you start with lower notes you can build up to a great finish.
Or you can build up then bring it back down. This is how most
Solos work in song. The have a start, middle and ending.

She was just at Gordon’s place now she’s at yours David. Can this woman teleport? Does she change dance style with the country she’s in?

You are finding your own voice for lead playing! Throw out the rule books and just keep chopping wood, my friend. You are making great strides.

EDIT: All these plink sessions from members are making me want to join in.

@stitch

Thanks Rick. I just observed that in Toby’s latest share. And I committed myself to getting pattern 4 under the fingers as you suggested to Gordon elsewhere. That should increase the range from lowest to highest note.

@batwoman

:rofl: oh yeah, Layla is dancing from Scotland to South Africa to France. Now I am waiting to see if others standing on the fringes at this dance opt in and perhaps she’ll be crossing the ocean to the Americas or Australasia :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

@CT

Appreciate the support and encouragement, Clint. Learning, growing, and having a ball at with our belle of the ball, Layla.

My mindset is: “learn the ‘rules’, understand the ‘rules’, make your own ‘rules’”. Of course rule 1 is the one rule to rule them all: “If it sounds good, it is good” :grin:

Enjoyed your plink shared this morning. And if so inclined, Toby shared a BT for this or lay down a loop, and join this party, put your spin and flavour on this chowder.

Hi David,

Nice “thick” tone to the lead work - goes well over the thinner rhythm sound.
I’m not well placed to comment on lead - not my forte at all, but I’m a sucker for long notes - perhaps throw some more in? A few 5 syllable words if you like. :slight_smile:

Hey, Digger, good to hear from you. Feels like a while since I read your comments or enjoyed one of your originals.

Appreciate the feedback and encouragement. I particularly like the comment on tones. The rhythm was recorded into a looper (a new ‘toy’ I am getting to grips with) and played through my amp that doesn’t have an fx loop. So the differences in tone were created using the guitar, working with pickup choice, volume, and tone, to play both recorded rhythm and lead simultaneously with the settings dialed in on the amp.

It does seem that Layla gets around. :wink: That sounded great though. I caught a couple of the sentences.

Thanks Mark, she certainly is doing the rounds here :laughing: Glad you enjoyed and appreciate the encouragement.

Layla seems to be a very popular lady at the moment.

That was good stuff David and your technique is coming along very nicely.

You are progressing and this is no exception. Nicely done, good tone and play. I enjoyed it…

Take care!

Guys, thanks for taking a look and for the encouraging feedback.

Like all things guitar, learning and lots of practice leads to progress. I’m happy with current levels of progress, given the amount of practice.
