I don’t think I’ve introduced myself yet, my name is John, i live in Scotland.I have been playing guitar badly for around 40 years. So I joined Justin’s guitar lessons in January this year I took myself back to the very start to learn the basics all over again , especially scales, now my playing has improved and I’ve started to write my own songs. I’ve always had little tunes that never went anywhere and I was fed up playing other peoples music, what I’ve been writing isn’t great but it’s mine I’m definitely not a singer but I’m having fun.
Anyway I wanted to know if anyone is having issues with guitar picks ! Mine keep slipping through my fingers causing lots of duff notes. However I have now solved this problem by adding a little bit of masking tape to the pick just where the thumb and finger make contact, I hope this helps others who might experience the same issue. Who knew a little bit of masking tape could improve your strumming.
I’ve been playing for about two years…since I had no idea what type of pick I’d like when I started, someone suggested to me to buy some variety packs, different brands and thicknesses. I’ve found myself gravitating to Dunlop Gator picks between .7 and 1.2 mm thick…I like the feel of them since they’re not smooth, shiny plastic.
I started as only a fingerstyle player and started using a pick probably about a year later. Initially I was frustrated with how the pick moved around while playing. Moving to the dunlop maxx grip series helped. The tortrex pick material also seems good. Have experimented with punching a hole in the middle of the grip. Finally have settled on the bogstreet (www.bogstreet.com) lead pick as my pick of choice. It offers 3 different thicknesses (I use the thickest) on each corner and it definitely doesn’t move around on my like the others. Now I use a pick on probably a quarter of the songs I play.
Personally, I find the Fender nylon picks, with the sandpaper-like grip area, to be sufficient. I rarely run into problems with it moving around too much.
Hello John.
I understand what you’re experiencing. I had the same problem too. I solved it “somewhat” with sandpaper. But that wasn’t a lasting solution. After a while, the pick was slipping between my fingers again too. And i tried several different picks, from different companies.
Untill i came along these picks. Dunlop maxi grips. For me the standard ones work really well.

I’m never getting other picks again. I must have bought about 20 of these, after i realized that this works for me.
Hope it helps!
Thanks everyone for your comments, links and tips. Happy strumming
I’ve found Monster Grips to be very helpful. They’re just small, round, tacky pads you stick on your favorite pick. Very unobtrusive and inexpensive.
Only been at it for 12 months and I don’t like picks. I just seem to like the more even mellow sound of my thumb and finger nails . My pick works don’t resonate like I’d like.
Indeed. Justin has a great lesson on thumb and finger technique.
I know that feeling! I like the medium / hard schecter nylon picks (SPTMN / SPTHN). The embossed logo gives just enough raised surface to make my grip more stable. I used to use Gibson picks, but gave up as they were too shinny and slippery for me!
Thanks guys
All very helpful
Just ordered some from a well known shopping site.
Will be interested to see if they move around less than the standard JD nylon one I am using at present.
Michael
So slippery guitar picks appear to be common I hope you have success
Been using Max Grips and Jaz IIIs for a good few years. Ibanez sand and rubber grips are also very secure. But there is always this
Works like a treat and clears your sinuses at the same time. Win win.
Great!
Let us know how they work out.
Good luck!
Just found this thread after a search!
Was having major issues with picks slipping but the addition of a bit of Sellotape has solved this. OK, not sure about solved it yet but certainly has helped.
