I’m Jonathan, 35 years old and are now in my ‘second’ guitar life/journey. When I was a student I had an electric guitar and fiddled around with that by myself and the game ‘Rocksmith’. I liked it a lot but never got to barre chords and/or having an actual decent teaching program. I didn’t play as much anymore and sold the guitar later on.
A few years ago I started a new hobby ‘stand up comedy’ and actually liked that a lot also. I did 100+ gigs and even got to the (semi) finals of a couple of competitions. And then last october fatherhood happened and I’m not getting all across the country for 3 nights of the week. However, now I have a new dream to later on go and do standupcomedy with songs (in the Netherlands this is a pretty popular art form called ‘cabaret/kleinkunst’.
I started my second guitar life in december last year on acoustic with a real life teacher. In march I ended that, we didn’t click so well and I felt I wasn’t learning a lot.
I started Justin’s course and it all clicked a lot better. I bought an electric guitar (a ‘Doodad’ Les Paul-like guitar) and have been rocking the modules since (currently grade 2/module 11).
I hope to use this forum to learn and also show my progress, nice to meet you all!
with that goal of combining your stand up comedy and guitar, I think you’re already on a good way with regard to ongoing motivation!
I love that, comedy plus an instrument. When I was a kid and then teen, there was for example Otto Waalkes in Germany whom I liked or then Willy Astor, who maybe did a bit more refined comedy I should start to watch/listen more of this again!
Welcome Jonathan @Jovatov! When you start combining your guitar playing and comedy chops, I’d sure this group would love to see some samples! Assuming you do comedy in English, of course…though I’m pretty sure some folks here speak Dutch.
I am happy you found Justins page. He is really great teacher and I am sure you will learn a lot!
Concept about standup comedy and playing instrument is new to me, but it sound really interesting. I am looking forward to watch one of those, but I wont look for it from others - I am gonna wait for yours, its completely at you much time you need for share with us.
Thanks all for the welcome! I’ll definitely try to share some songs eventually. I have three songs already, though they all have a lot of chords that at the moment far out of reach for me.
And they’re in dutch, but subtitles would be an option :). For now I’m focussing on getting through the beginner modules
I’m certainly not aware of any rules that they have to be in English. I’m sure we’ve had recordings in many languages. I remember some in Spanish and some in Italian for sure. So Dutch is just fine, I think, even if we don’t all understand it.
Welcome Jonathan. You will find a good number of the guitar students in this community fancy themselves comedians! When you need some new material for your shows, here’s a place to search. We will look foward to you posting a video some day of your ‘cabaret/kleinkunst.’
Hoi Jonathan,
Welkom hier and what I just said in that other topic that your first video is a big thing is of course not true for you at all … you have been on stage so many times ,easy peasy for you
I was born in Amersfoort … (I can’t do anything about it ).You must have been there at some point, right?.. and now I live in Nijkerk (where did that go wrong )
if you need musical accompaniment in 5 years or so
Of course been to Amersfoort! Nice city. Passed Nijkerk often also. I’m born in the beautifull (Oh oh) The Hague. Now living in… Ede (not much compared to the Hague but de Veluwe is a big plus). My wife is from Fryslan so we just stuck in the middle
Don’t worry about the language… music is universal… I have a couple of favorites that are sung in Japanese - a language that I know about 25 words !!! That doesn’t detract from the beauty of the songs at all!
Besides, modern tech makes translation very easy!
Just keep learning and having a fun time working your way towards your goal!!!
Hello Jonathan, welcome to the community forum. I can think of several musicians in the US that have made a career out of combining humor and music. Locally in North Carolina, a favorite of my wife is a musician Mike Cross. Many of his songs had a story with a comedic punch line at the end and several have been posted on YouTube.
A long time guitar(s) lover since I was 15 years old … Used to play in our band (rock & folk) initially covering Neil young songs (there are a lot … ) and then moving progressively to our own songs. As a rythm guitar player + some melodic / solo lines (not improvised …), I’ve always been impressed by improvisation skills of unknown guitarist seen in blues / rock Jams / gigs … Our band has just splitted (we stay big friends and I realized that it was maybe the good opportunity for me to climb “My Everest” = playing the blues & jamming it anywhere with anyone in any blues bar in the world … So on stage and no more just watching it (which I enjoyed a lot by the way).
Hi Jonathan, I see that you’ve already been introduced to my form of Guitar related silliness! It all helps, lightens the mood!
Have fun and enjoy learning, enjoying it and having fun are the most important parts, learning guitar is a lifetime experience, there’s always something new to look at so take it easy and enjoy!
