Happy Birthday Finger Style

I found this to be too big a jump in difficulty from the previous lesson. Too many moving parts for me at this stage. Instead I’ve been having a great time with more basic Thumb/Index/Middle/Ring/etc. sequence and just working on chord changes and rhythm. And then trying to play House of the Rising Sun. Will come back to Happy Birthday sometime in the future!

Akkana, Justin doesn’t have a song lesson for Dust in the Wind, but he does have a lesson on the fingerstyle pattern used in the song. You can learn the pattern in the Folk Fingerstyle lessons in Grade 5, Folk Fingerstyle pattern 1:

I’m making slow progress with Dust in the Wind and Greensleeves, though a month later I still can’t play either one very well. Thanks for the links, both of you! I’ll check them out. I’ll take any help I can get with this stuff.

I’ve also added “Fast Car” to my fingerstyle practice:

I’m finding it easier than the other two, and if I play it as a warm-up, I do a little better on the harder fingerstyle pieces.

Are these recordings saved anywhere? I found a listing in the clubs section of the website, but none of the past club events seem to have video links.

EDIT: found it, https://www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/vintage-club-17-fingerstyle-with-dust-in-the-wind-cla-069
by searching on the top level of the website rather than going to the Clubs page.

This is much harder than I imagined. Not only are the shapes and notes unusual, but on top of that having to pluck different strings in a different pattern (some together) with my right hand feels nearly impossible. The third part is giving me so much trouble, I can’t even remember it without the tab.

It indeed is hard. There is quite a jump in difficulty.

What worked for me was breaking it down into parts and practicing 1 part first. And move on to other parts only when I was quite confident and satisfied with the one I was practicing. I spend weeks on each part.

I still miss or grab the strings while plucking them together lol. I filled my nails, and practice just the strings which need to be pluck together. It improved after few days.

You don’t have to. It will automatically happen when you practice it for few months. Just focus on playing and enjoying.
