Happy to be here - hello from John in the US

Good morning to All. My name is John and I am from the U.S. I’m 72 and somewhat new to acoustic guitar. I have taken a couple of other online courses but they were limited in my opinion! I have been following Justin Guitar on YouTube. I really like his teaching style so I’m anxious to jump right in. I have to say that the amount of content is a bit overwhelming right now. Any suggestions as to the best way to get the most out of Justin’s program.

Thanks very much!

Best,

John

Happy New Year!!!

Welcome to the forum John! Just follow what Justin says, and you should be good.

                               Happy New Year!

Hi John,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

If you mean via YouTube and randomly ( sort of) click around there, then I say (and otherwise too :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:) start here on the site with lesson 1 (or check the last lesson of module 1 to see what you can already do) and just follow the lessons that follow each other… in the beginning you will fly through it and you can also look ahead a bit, but I really liked the structure that Justin has put into the entire lesson program… I usually went too fast but I also know where I need to look back to improve the techniques

Greetings,Rogier

Hi John.
Best way to use JG is to start at the very beginning.
Start at lesson one, here.
It sounds like ya may have a bit of experience, but still start at lesson 1, review is good. fwiw, I’ve been playing a while but I still started with lesson one thinking I may have developed bad habits over the years.

Have fun man. This is a great place to land at for your guitar journey!

Welcome to the community John!

+1 on the “start with lesson 1 and follow the structured material at your own pace” advice.

Welcome John! We’re happy to have you here:) Have fun learning!

Thanks so much!!!

Welcome to the forum. The tips I’d give are to find what makes you feel like picking up the guitar every day and keep doing that. Keeping it fun more than following a prescribed approach helps.

It’s challenging at first. When I started I wanted to do 15 minutes a day but my fingers wouldn’t let me do more than 5. So I did that 3 times a day.

The reward you get is so amazing that it’s worth hanging in there when it’s frustrating in those first couple of months. In my wildest dreams before I started playing I never imagined I’d be able to stand in front of others on stage and play a full set. Much of what I learned came from the start Justin gave me.

For me it has always been about the songs. Find a simple easy song to start with and don’t worry if it’s not what your dream is. What you’ll learn from being able to play a song from start to finish will show you that it’s achievable and before you know it you’ll have half a dozen songs that you can play.

Hello John. In addition to the good advice you’ve received in this post, be sure to check out this one:

You can learn a few tricks and be entertained by all of us geriatric guitar students (I am a spry 67) and our struggles to take up guitar and finally live out our youthful rock star fantasies!

Thanks Mike for your insight and encouragement. Have a Healthy and Happy 2026!

Hi John
Nice to meet you! Happy you’re here
I would agree with all the advice here.
I got a lot out of starting from the very first lesson on the website and working through them. I’d really recommend it. There is so much valuable information there even if you already have some knowledge and experience
take you’re time, have fun and play songs :guitar:
Happy new year!

Hi John, welcome to the community. You have gotten a lot of good advice above. Be patient with yourself. Follow from the beginning. Play a little a time at first until you develop your fretting hand calluses on your fingertips, but try to play a little each day. Have fun learning songs and be sure to ask questions in the community when you need help.
