Harley Benton SG

Not that I can get one of these here but the value in ‘cheap’ guitars these days is pretty incredible

Not sold on the neck pickup tones but other than that this looks a beast for 280 euro

I know this might sound expensive but if you can find some other deals then the DHL shipping from Thomann is not that bad. Once you’ve spread that cost out over a few items you might be surprised at how fast you get to the break-even point.

Example: Right now I’m looking at getting a Harley Benton 10" cab to go with my 5-watt single-ended tube amp, it’s got an 8" speaker that can only be improved upon.

My cart ATM looks like this
HB 10" speaker cab $112
Celestion 10" Creamback speaker (b-stock) $125
Speaker cable $7.70
Shipping $105

Around here a generic 10" cab is an easy $200 plus.
A Celestion Creamback is $190

So right there alone the cost for me to order from Thomann vs buying here in Canada is a wash. I’ve also got my eye on a few other items that come with huge price differences compared to what I can find here. One of them is a Royer R121 clone, it’s the Thomann house brand and it’s $99, a Fethead inline preamp to go with it is $79. Here the closest analog to that mic is a Stagg clone for $300 and the Fethead is $110. Quality wise the Stagg is not as good as the Thomann either.

One other strategy is to order an item that sells for more locally and then flip it on arrival. I’ve done that with a few pedals to help lower my costs even further. As an example, the Digitech Trio+ band creator is $349 ordered and $499 locally for me.

IOW, get the SG! Life is too short to not have the things you want.

Harley Benton guitars do look nice and some models I’ve seen in different videos are pretty cool, but this one is a hard pass for me, just like every LP style model, because the shape of the original SG is so iconic and literally engrained in my mind, that I can’t accept this one.

Nice tips!

Not planning on getting a new guitar right now but good to know

I actually have an SG in the UK I’ve not seen in a couple decades lol

One of these days, you should share pics of your gear with us!

Yeah there’s still good value out there and I’d definitely consider a Harley Benton in future.

I will say though that it wouldn’t be this guitar though. Partly because I already own a Gibson SG (just an entry level studio model) and mine is a full kilogram lighter than the HB. Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t make the HB bad, and you might have different priorities to me, but when I was buying a big factor in choosing the SG over a LP was it was so much lighter.

I did set out to do this a while back but life got in the way. I’ll make another attempt at it.
