Hello all! This is Kim from Belgium

I was referring specifically to the Yamaha Silent guitar range.

I owned one for a number of years, it worked particularly well because it was a smaller place and my wife could hear me playing when she was trying to sleep in. So I used it until I built another room that was sound proofed like a studio and I could play my regular acoustics without waking her.

Personally, I bought a uke first of all for my son when he was about five I think.
But earlier is possibly better (?) if you think the uke would survive family life
Couldn’t play guitar nor uke at that time and then, I looked up uke lessons on youtube and that’s only why and how I ended up here one day
Most of the time, my son wasn’t super interested, but I think now is a good time to revive the connection. Two years ago or so, we even built a ukulele kit together. I’m just trying to find smart ways, because when I wanted to teach him, he wan’t so keen on it and pushing him didn’t work!

Oh wow, cool! I see you are from region Antwerp, I live also in the Flemish part, but near Hasselt!

Yeah I combine it now, so that I get hopefully less depending on it in the future
I noticed especially with old faithful that if I use the app it is all going smoothly, since I hear when the strums should be, but if I use a metronome it is not that simple. I also started using a gap click to see if I could still stay in time without hearing the metronome. And when this is all more or less ok muting the strings I see if it still is ok when I introduce some chord changes.

Having fun playing, that’s really the crux of it. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

That reminds me of a saying in a book series that I am currently reading (yeah other hobby of mine): Journey over Destination :love_you_gesture:

Try tapping your foot, along with the rythm. Also, the metronome will become your new best friend.
There’s tons of them online and i use this one: https://www.metronomeonline.com/
Distraction free and it has the option of stressing the first beat. (Which helps with counting)
The more you practice this, the more ingrained it will become.

You’ll find yourself, in time, counting allmost subcontiously, along with the metronome. No need anymore to look at the screen, your ears will do all that work.

(Reading you say?. You should see my e-book library… E-books, because i was told by my wife that we didn’t have anymore space to stack more physical books. A hard drive, on the other hand…)

Looks like guitar and books are common denominators for Belgians😊

Welkom, Kim, from another Flemish (would be) guitar player and book reader.

Sorry to hear of your trials as a parent. It’s a never-ending endeavour. Even when they’re ‘grown up’, but we get out what we put in.

Would you like me to add Zonhoven to the Map while I’m here?

The same here as well haha!

Damn that sounds very nice. Now I really want an acoustic! But I probably have to wait a couple of months due to finances. Then I also have some time to prepare my husband :innocent: . Because he was already saying that one guitar is enough :head_shaking_horizontally:

Ugh sorry @domi7 I accidentally flagged your post in stead of pushed on the like and I cannot seem to find a way to remove the flag :worried:

I anyone of the moderators read this. I did not mean to flag this post!

Could he hold the uke normally by then? The reason that I ask is because we recently found an abandoned play guitar for kids. It is not tunable and sounds horrible, but she seems to enjoy playing it for short periods. She cannot hold it normally however, it has to lay horizontally on her lap and then she drops the guitar pick also in the hole in the guitar

Yeah I can imagine that! My daughter is also like that, so I just try to gently nudge her by having opportunities and hoping that she someday will want to really try it.

That sounds by the way very cool to build your own ukelele!

Yeah I believe I have the wrong posture for that. For some reason I have to sit with one leg over the other to hold my guitar steady, which means that tapping my foot will move the guitar slightly  . I know it is lame. I probably should find something else to move then.

Yes! I have moved my strumming practice from the app to using a metronome! So I am hoping that it will soon improve!

(Haha known problem! I also use an e-reader, but just because it is easier to take books with you or to read in bed  )

You are in Belgium at the moment?

It is a municipality close to Hasselt. I kinda like it here!

Amen :joy: !

This happened to a few of us before, but pushing the button seems only like a first step… in order to flag a post you then have to confirm and type some text, I think!

Could he hold it?.. uhm, it’s quite some time ago now  I think that yes, either sitting, or standing, maybe he was more often sitting and I remember I showed him how he should hold it (while I also still remember his claiming that he knew all too well how to hold it  )

But these soprano ukes are soo light that they’re nearly flying in the air  above all the one we built, I should weigh it. The problem with cheap ukes is often intonation unfortunately. I already had to fix a few ukes because they weren’t made with enough care.

My teacher solves this problem by "air"tapping the foot that’s dangling in the air. I don’t know if this will work for you, but it’s worth trying anyway.
For me, crossing my legs doesn’t work. There are some things that don’t like to be “confined”.

Don’t be worried if this doesn’t progress as fast as you would like/expect. It’s a learningprocess that will take it’s time, but be assured, practice is all it needs. How much time however, is different for every player.
The big trick is never giving up. Keep going. You’ll get there!

Hi Kim,

Greetings from a fellow Belgian!

You’re right, Justin is a great teacher and when I see all the warm welcomes here, I am affirmed in my idea that this Community is a warm safe place for players of all levels! (thanks guys!)

For your rhythm practice:
Try playing over some drum tracks as well! (you can find several suitable 4/4 at x bpm drum loops on youtube)
It will sound a bit more like “real music” and many find it easier than the metronome.
Anno 2025, we have more to rely on than a mechanical ticker.

A long time in the past, the long forgotten moment exists where my wife “asked” whether I “was going to sell the first guitar” since I bought another one.

Oof!

Ah kids, they are so perceptive! My daughter is a bit on the small side. I noticed with the children’s acoustic guitar she is not able to hold it normally when sitting, the guitar is to high for her, she is a small 3.5 years old.

Yeah I can imagine that, that is the problem with buying stuff for kids!

Sorry for the large answer time, I have been quite busy! I am making (crocheting) a goodbye present for our boss who is leaving and there is little time and so much to do

I tried it, and damn! It is way easier to follow a drum sort of metronome than a regular one. My mind has been blown! :exploding_head:

How many guitars have been added since? :joy:
