Hello all! This is Kim from Belgium

Hi, I’m Kim from Belgium!

I’m 34 and a mom of two. Our oldest daughter passed away at 17 months from a metabolic disease, and our youngest is now 3 and has autism.

I first tried learning guitar two years ago, but the noise was too much for my youngest and our old house had poor sound isolation. Since moving, things have improved a lot and I picked up the electric guitar again. I’ve been playing for about three months now, currently in module 7, and I’m trying to rely less on the app because I depend a bit too much on the visuals to keep time. I also try to play for my colleagues regularly to challenge myself to play in front of others.

I discovered Justin Guitar through my sister-in-law, who told me he’s an amazing teacher — and she was right!

Hi Kim

Welcome to the community. Justin is great and we have a bunch of other great teachers as well who can answer questions and have cool clubs. There is lots of great support in this community.

Music is fantastic for the youth so you will be doing you kid a favor exposing him to music early. I am glad you found our communiry. Welcome aboard, amlnd keep up your practice and next thing you know you will be switching chords and playing along to your favorites.

Welcome to the forum. Interesting to read your story. Have you considered an acoustic guitar? I play acoustic almost exclusively, and the other option with acoustic guitars is what’s called the silent guitar. Yamaha has nylon and steel string models.

You play it through your headphones and those in the same house cannot hear you play.

Yeah, totally!

I never was exposed to playing an instrument, but was always a bit jealous on peers who got to practice the guitar. So here we are now! Never too old to learn

My daughter (yes it’s a little girl  ) absolutely loves music! She is so very shy, but when there is music playing she just turns into a party animal haha :joy:

I guess when I first started to play it did not sound very musical as she was always telling me to stop

Hi Kim,

nice to meet you here!
It’s great to hear you restarted the guitar and that this time around your daughter enjoys it and also to hear you play for your colleagues at this early stage! Kudos!

Now it seems your sound/disturbing problems are solved, but… whenever I want to practice without disturbing anyone, I’ll just use my electric without an amp.

May the guitar help you a bit to cope with everyday’s challenges and struggles!

cu around, Dominique

Hello Kim and welcome to this community of caring and inspiring people. I have two young grandsons who like to play my guitar (meaning bang on it and drop picks in the sound hole), so last Christmas I got the oldest a starter ukulele. He was thrilled and now when I visit he wants to get out his “guitar” while his little brother bangs on whatever nearby sounds like drum. I hope your children will share your love of music too!

Hey Michael,
great idea - I am also a big advocate of the uke as an easy entry into music (and possibly later guitar) and what a great gift to give to children, possibly showing them one or two chords to accompany an easy song, but even just like this just to try and have fun on their own.
Maybe an idea for Kim to have one of the not so expensive ukes lying around.
It’s also fun to instantly grab and play something, not having to plug the electric it in or take the acoustic out of the case…

Yay!! A fellow Belgian! Welcome!!
That makes 4 of us now, if i’m not mistaken?

It’s good to hear that things have picked up nicely after such distressing times.
If the visuals help you in your guitar journey, then use them.
I too rely a bit too much on yt video’s to see when chord changes happen, but i’m training my ears and my counting to get better at not watching a screen. But it takes time, so don’t worry about that too much.

Don’t bother too much either about making fast/slow/no progress. As long as you do not stop, it’s progress.

Having fun playing, that’s really the crux of it. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Well yes! And I believe I will at some point buy an acoustic one, since my music preference goes from pop to rock, punk and even a bit of metal to also the very cheesy songs

Are there any Yamaha acoustic ones that you recommend that are not to pricey and have a small neck? I play a Fender Squire mustang at the moment.

I also tried playing in the very beginning with headphones, but I was looking to much at the fretboard and with one ear I was listening to the beat and so I had to fight to keep my headphones on my head .

I also play regularly without the amp!

And yeah I have nice curious colleagues. So I feel safe enough to play :slightly_smiling_face:

That is so nice! I am also wondering what age a good age would be to introduce something like this!

Hello Kim & Welcome!!!

The best way to choose a guitar, whether electric or acoustic, is to go to a music store & try some! Overall feel like body size & depth, neck width & depth make a big difference! Also important is whether or not it visually appeals to you… the better a guitar looks, the more likely you will be inspired & want to play it!

As far as age for beginners… as soon as they can hold it & treat it well… it’s ok to start! One of our Community members is a teacher in Italy & teaches youngsters how to play uke in her classes! @Silvia80 do you have any advice for Kim?

Gook luck & have FUN!!! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oops little girl. Thats what I meant :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I have a girl also, wonderful angels :baby_angel:
uhh and sometimes demons :smiling_face_with_horns:

Oh you definitely should. I freaking love my acoustic. As a matter of fact, one of my main loves is playing and singing super hard punk songs on the acoustic. Is crazy fun.

Linolium by NOFX on acoustic is amazingly punk.
