Another old cat here (sorry I 'm not a great fan of dogs ) since I’m almost 65, spending most of my time in Paris but also in Brittany and Morocco where I’ll be next sunday for a couple of weeks. So I need to buy a new guitar in Marrakech and let it there cause it’s a real pain to travel with it onboard… Best excuse isn’t it ?
Like many of us I started my journey as a complete beginner during the lockdown of Covid in 2020 but had to quit a few months later due to frozen shoulders (very painful so I had no other choice than to stop playing). And then I started again at the beginning of this year and I’m now at the end of lesson 10 since I started again from lesson 1.
As a reward to myself for all this hard work, I recently decided to buy an electric Gretsch with a boss Katana gen3. But hey! it ‘s a completely different animal compared to my folk. At first I thought it was not very well settled cause I was used to press the strings a bit hard on my folk and it looks like if you do so on an electric guitar you’ ll be completely out of tune…
I guess I still have so many things to discover that I don’t feel so old now. Btw I still don’t know what to think of that Gretsch but the Katana is very impressive to say the least…
Now if only I could find someone else to play with…
See you soon guys
It was also a “Christophe” who gave me my first guitar as a present for christmas. I’ll always be thankful to him
Just press the strings less down on the Gretsch. Maybe it’s a good type of practice. Or get a little thicker strings if you prefer. That helps a bit. Or (/also) a wound G string. But then, when in the future, you start with bending, you’ll probably want to go back.
I am glad you found your way to the community. I really love the Gretch sound. Many of my favorite players use them. They have a lot of variations with their tones. You need to give them some good time and exploration. They definitely have thier own flavor.
I travel a good bit myself and I have had multiple bilateral shoulder injuries thats plagued me too. Its reoccurring and the latest one was really bad. I am still feeling the effects from it with multiple torn ligaments. I am just dealing. Frozen shoulder absolutely sucks, but I am too hard headed to chill so, I dont worry too much about that issue.
Hi Dom, very few people still call me by my real Christian name, it’s kind of formal…
Most of the time I’m called Toff or Chris but I 'm sure you know that already.
Yeah, I’ll be pressing the strings less hard now that I’ ve seen the difference. Thanks
Thanks for the kind words Jason. Yes that bilateral frozen shoulders was a gigantic nightmare that lasted 2 years without proper rest at night. I ‘m now so glad that it’ s over…except from time to time when my work really stresses me out. Still 3 years to go before retirement
Thank you all for your warm welcome. One last question though: is there a video or something on Justin’s site with some good advices for people like me who began on acoustic guitar and later discover the brand new world of the electric ones ?
nice week to all of you and thanks in advance.
Ps: already found a few videos talking about the Katana. Glad I choose this amp to begin with
No, just grab the electric one in your hands and continue with the course , and every now and then pick up the acoustic one to see if you still aspire to that and that together is the good of both worlds, of course only if you want that and you have the time to split your time as if it is of course not double time and so on…
but it sounds like you now want to go for electric 100% and that is easier to do than first electric and then acoustic… have fun
Hello Christophe.
Cool cats are always welcome!!
