Been an occasional lurker here, but thought that I’d post a hello.
I began to play guitar many years ago and played maybe half a dozen gigs in my early 20s playing acoustic as part of a trio (I’m now in my early 60s!). But, (seems to be a very common story), life got in the way - family & so on - and the guitar got left behind. I decided to pick it up again 3 or 4 years ago and have had several false starts owing to health and other issues, but I am determined to give it all I can now.
I never really got far with my playing and so started Justin’s course totally from scratch, which has been worthwhile, as it has encouraged me to clear up some awful bad habits (that ‘practice makes permanent’ is so true!) and introduced me to methods which have been really useful and also reminded me of much I’d forgotten. There have been parts I’ve found really easy, then others bang in the middle with which I’ve really struggled!
Anyhow, my slooooow progress means that I’m now on Grade 2, Module 12, but really getting a lot out of it. I write the occasional song and will maybe one day share - really should do!
I like and listen to a really wide range of music - from Debussy to Elvis Presley to Tom Waits to Joni Mitchell to Muddy Waters! But my younger daughter introducing me to a range of (new) music & musicians means that I now listen to a lot of Indie pop: Lizzy McAlpine, Orla Gartland, Ricky Montgomery, Adam Melchor, Dodie, Annika Bennett, will give you an idea of what predominately comes through my headphones these days. I now introduce my daughter to new musicians! Also love hard blues: Joanne Shaw Taylor, Beth Hart, SRV, etc.
I guess I’ll call a halt there, before I bore the pants off everyone. Anyhow, nice to be here, to read and to share. Good wishes to you all in your musical journeys.
I’m actually in Hurst. I was back at the weekend visiting family and friends and ringing the church bells for the coronation.
I’m currently visiting family in The Wirral, heading back to SG tomorrow morning.
You should give that group a try. They are a friendly bunch and often have social meetups at a pub in Reading or Caversham. If you do, tell Anne hi from me.
Hi, Im starting from scratch with the course and it really is helping me iron out such bad habits. Never realised how sloppy my chords were till I started the course.
Welcome to the community. I got to visit Reading back in 2007, I worked for a company and the team I worked for was based in Reading. Thanks for the tips on Indie artists to check out, always interested in other’s likes. Look forward to hearing more from you.
Nice to meet you Danny and hope you continue to get more joy out of playing. Like you coming back to the guitar after awhile for me has been great. All the best!
