Like a lot of folks here, I started playing years ago and then family, career…life got in the way. Mine was the barest of starts, but it stuck and I’ve been clinging to it ever since. So here I am, a bit older (ok, a lot older), and the ever-present soundtracks in my head are still itching to find their way out!
I first found Justin around 2004 and learned a few things, but aside from briefly flirting with a restart in 2015 that was interrupted by the realities of a new job, the guitar has been silently hanging on the wall only whispering of potential. In the back of my mind has always been the notion that starting to get those notes from my head and out of my fingers would at least be a 5–10-year process. About 18 months ago, I did the math and realized I couldn’t wait another day. I remembered Justin and was delighted to find that he’s still here - just as joyful as ever! So, I brushed the dust from my desire and got started.
It’s been a rocking journey – verses of struggle, choruses of joy when I get something right, and that sneaky refrain of doubt that I try to ignore. I’ve been learning solo so far, and as I noodled on the site the other day, I realized there was a whole ensemble I had never heard.
The community pages have left me astonished, awed, and humbled. You folks are amazing. I can’t wait to know you better.
Welcome to the community. A great intro. You have a way with words and sense that there is a songwriter and lyricist in you waiting to break out
I’m 70 years old and still learning with Justin’s and the communities help. I know what you mean about doing the math and realizing that you can’t put off your dream of playing the guitar for a later time. Have fun going through all of Justins lessons from the beginning and learning a lot of songs.
I hope you are enjoying your guitar Journey with Justin & I wish you lots of success ahead!
Seattle - with all that rainfall you must have lots of “indoor” days … perfect for practicing guitar!!!
Have Fun!!!
Dusty,
Welcome for a fellow PNW’r. Just East of you from the land of Kirk or as it is formally known, Kirkland. Started up a bit later in life too. Trying to rock it at 80 has some limitation but it is a blast here in the community of Justin and our fellow guitar lovers. Rock on!!!
Hello Dusty.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
