Hi everyone!
I’m Elizabeth from Buffalo NY. I’m a 29 year old mom of two. I bought myself a guitar off Facebook marketplace for my birthday and have been having so much fun being a beginner at something again! I started with Justin’s YouTube videos and took the plunge on the app about a month ago. Progress is slow and practice sessions are sometimes few and far between with my littles grabbing at my guitar while I play. So great to have this community for support!
welcome to the community. I have twin grandsons aged 2 that just love it when i play songs to them. They come up and slap on the guitar or on the strings which makes it hard but I want them to feel happy to be a part of it and they certainly do. The more extroverted twin will point at the guitar and say his version of “more more more”.
Look forward to hearing more from you
Welcome to the forum Elizabeth
Hi Liz
Nice to meet you ![]()
If you haven’t already, check out the JustinGuitar website too. There is a whole lot of amazing, helpful information and resources on there that isn’t on YouTube or the app.
This community is very friendly, supportive and encouraging too ![]()
Looking forward to hearing more from you ![]()
Hi Elizabeth,
Welcome to the forum. It’s a fantastic place to get help, advice and encouragement.
The advice above about checking out the website is very worthwhile as there are a huge amount of resources, song lessons, technique lessons etc in addition to the regular course lessons. For example, for your question in a separate thread about your finger and making chord shapes, I just remembered that there are also some Justin exercises on finger stretching (obviously starting very gently) on the website that coud be helpful for you.
I admire you learning while bringing up kids. When my kids were small, I would have been way to tired to practice guitar and would probably have just fallen asleep. Now they are grown ups!
Hi Elizabeth. I have found that the “little ones” (my two grandsons) enjoy dropping a pick in the sound hole more than playing the instrument. Better practice your technique at shaking and bouncing the guitar around to get your pick back! Have fun with your journey (kids and guitar both)!
Hi Elizabeth and welcome to the community. Can only repeat what has already been said, do check out the website, an amazing resource. Wish I had started at 29. Enjoy the ride.
Welcome Elizabeth!
Welcome to the forums. Enjoy the process!

Hello Liz & Welcome!!!
Finding practice time can really be challenging… that’s why I normally recommend getting a stand for your guitar so it’s ready to pick up & play when you have an extra 5 or 10 minutes… in your circumstance I would recommend a wall hanger. Out of reach of curious little people!!! ![]()
Those extra few minutes here and there really add up & they make a difference! I like to play a song or practice chord changes while my coffee is brewing before the rest of the house is awake!!!
Good luck with your new Journey!!!
Have lots of fun!!! ![]()

Hello Elizabeth, welcome to the community forum.
Hello Elizabeth
I would recommend you look at the lessons on the web site and use the Practice Assistant, it really helps to give a prompter and keep you on track.
Have fun on your guitar journey.
Adrian
Hi Elizabeth,
Welcome here ( just sayed it else where
) and wish you a lot of fun ![]()
You have given yourself a great gift and most likely your little ones too… seeing music played and having an instrument in the house often makes start playing ![]()
A cheap Ukulele for their hands might provide a slightly quieter practice session for you and a beginning for them … or you might be completely overwhelmed with a cacophony of sound. ![]()
And what Jasmine says (
the only text that caught my eye, so maybe the rest written too ) is a very good thing …give that to yourself too ![]()
Greetings,Rogier
Hi Elizabeth, welcome. Good you started with the guitar. Parenthood is a non-stop succession of unique moments, but gradually an evolving and continuously changing routine emerge and having a hobby like the guitar can be good for you and for the little ones. Nobody played a musical instrument at home, but I ended getting interested in the guitar and my sister dragged to the lessons too. My daughter learnt some basic guitar, piano and violin, but singing was what she sticked to. Listening me playing guitar may have had a role in that. Keep having fun with the little ones and also with the guitar.
Hello Elizabeth.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard

Hello Liz and welcome! With two little ones you will naturally find yourself playing a Uke one day or the other
The good news is a Uke is way easier than guitar! I think I never practiced it, you take it and play straight away ![]()
