Hey all, I’m Gareth, and this is my second time picking up my guitar. I’d like to say life got in the way last time, but that’s an excuse. This time, there are none.
My group of friends isn’t into playing any type of instruments, so I’m looking to get involved with like-minded people. I see now how important it is to have a community—people we can fall and pick ourselves up with and learn from each other.
I’ve got a Squire Stratocaster and a Spark amp, and I’ve been playing pretty much every day for about 2 months. I’m on module 3 readu to move onto module 4 also taking my time – it’s not a race, and I want to make sure everything’s as good as it can be for my level. I’ve been putting the modules onto worksheets and tracking them in my folder, only using the app when I need it. I’m a tech guy, but I also know it can be a huge distraction.
Welcome Gareth, sounds like you’re taking a sensible approach to it. I was someone who quit first (and second) time around but have made it stick this time.
I think some tech can be of great benefit - for example I found Justin’s songs app a big help in the first year, giving me something to play along to - but you’re right that tech for the sake of tech can be a big distraction.
You’re also right in your approach around taking your time. It’s not good learning 100 different chords and techniques if you’re bad at all of them! Start with a few chords, learn to keep rhythm and make smooth changes between them and you’ll already sound better than the person who raced ahead to module 106 on week 3!
Welcome and best of luck on your second journey. Community is very important to keep on anything.
I am not sure which Lesson Justin discusses Learning Log but I think its fairly early on, I would encourage the same. Looking back at my improvements often help keep me on the road.
you’ll find most have intermittent learning journeys. My own began probably about 25yrs ago and nothing really started to stick until my latest “start” almost 2yrs ago. online lesson platforms have helped me a ton. largely because in-person instructors and especially group classes move faster than I can handle, but also because at the very beginning I needed extra remedial assistance.
Nice, tech will be good when you start getting into more advanced stuff like transcription softwear and also once you get comfortable enough to start recording using different imput, using DAWs and things like that. Glad you jumped back in. I really enjoyed the stuff in 3, there is a lot of great foundational stuff. You will like 4 also, don’t take it too fast, tons of killer information.
The amount of great songs that start to become avalible once you begin to secure the techniques in these grades is nuts. I hope you find people to jam with.
Welcome to the forum. Been there, done that. haha. The cool thing about sticking to it with justin’s lessons is the reward is really amazing. Hang in there and enjoy the ride.
Welcome to the forum Gareth and good luck with your guitar journey! This is a very friendly and helpful community so ask for help whenever you need it!
