Hi Gill, can I ask, what is the Vintage Club? I’m also in my 50s, loving learning from Justin’s course, but maybe the Vintage Club would be a good motivator for me…

Just seen you are in Auckland so time of day might be an issue with a lot of the clubs.
However, @Richard_close2u is hosting special Vintage Club this Wednesday, specifically for those out East in Australasia. If there is enough interest I believe the plan is to do them more frequently but numbers will matter. So it may be worth signing up, so there another name on the list to make that happen !

Hi Janey, nice to say hello! The others have answered how to join the clubs. I just wanted to say give them a try if you can. It’s great there will be one on Wednesday at a time slot more suited to your part of the world. I’ll be working but hey ho!
It’s encouraging that all the different people are online at the same time learning along side you. People are a different stages, but that doesn’t matter at all. @Richard_close2u guides you through and is a clear and patient teacher. We’ve just been having lots of fun with rhythm & power chords. Enjoy!!

I did it! Phew! I performed in public for the first time, at the local learners recital. Mainly kids, a couple of teenagers, a big hair bloke and me performing for family & friends. Vintage Club hangs out with the Kids Club:-) So yes it was fun as well as a challenge.
Anxiety hit just before I was due up but I managed. A few duff notes but I got through it. A real test but it was a very friendly atmosphere - they seemed to welcome a middle aged woman having a go at the rock chick thing! Loved hearing the kids

Welcome to the JGC Community, Gill, sounds like your first OM gig was great fun, and well done for seeing it through.
Oh my, a Vintage Les Paul style. Is that a solid mahogany body, like Gibson’s 4.5kg, or perhaps a lighter semi-hollow ? Regardless, if you are struggling with it and are going to be into playing Electric for the longer term, I would seriously think about changing your guitar to something lighter and more fitting for your frame.
I have tagged @Jenndye429 here as one of our more prominent Electric players, hasn’t being playing very long but regularly performs too, who might share her guitar-styles experiences with you.
Look forward to hearing you at a JGC OM sometime in the future.

Glad to hear your performance went so well! The first time I played a community Open Mic here, I was a nervous mess 
But every time I’ve performed since then it gets easier and although there will always be nerves, I can control them a lot better now.
As @Elixir1253 mentioned, I exclusively play electric and I’ve been playing for just over 2 1/2 years now. I got my first guitar at 39 and I’m now 42. In that time I’ve managed to collect 5 electrics 
Many LPs tend to be heavy. I have one as well, but it is the studio model which is weight relieved and much lighter than a standard LP. I would say to continue to experiment with both sitting and standing to see which is easier on your back. I play standing 90% of the time and it is much easier on me no matter which guitar I’m playing. I’m much more prone to hunching over/bad posture when I sit.
BTW, nothing wrong with a middle aged rock chick

I think you are definitely right, if I keep on with the electric then I need to seriously think on changing. Going about that will be an interesting challenge. I bought my electric about 20 years when I wasn’t aware of any online resources, was a complete uninformed novice, hadn’t anyone I could ask and walked into the music store and obviously wasn’t terribly well advised. Or maybe I didn’t listen. Whatever, I’ll need to make sure I’m more clued up if I do get another electric guitar! I’ve got a lot to learn

Great to chat with another Rock Chick! I hadn’t played the electric much until recently… and I kinda like it! I’m 55 and you definitely notice the old muscle mass not being as it was in your 50s. But hey ho, not going to let it stop me 
Wow on the 5 guitars in 2.5 years. Rock on girl!! Do you have one you prefer? I get you on the standing up. I can slouch too. I liked the way the neck was for my reach standing up, but the guitar is too blinkin heavy and it hurt. Woose Maybe if I had a lighter guitar I would stand to play a lot more too.
Good for you on the community Open Mic. I’ve not a clue on how to record or share video/live stream as yet. fab you are doing all that as well as progressing the guitar. I’ve just had a quick look to find you in the OM section and spotted you and your family & friends belting out The Hives to kick off 2024 excellent

I tell everyone that I love all my guitar “children” I tend to play my LP and my Gretsch the most. They have similar body styles and necks that I really enjoy playing. I have an Epiphone Casino hollowbody I tend to reach for when I’m writing songs as I will use it unplugged initially to work out the song and then plug it in to make sure it sounds good
