Hello from Lon - I'm a newbie to guitar

Hi everyone I’m Lon and just got a new acoustic guitar for my 67th birthday! I’ve never played guitar before and thought it was about time I did. I’ve played some piano in the past so I’m hoping that helps with some of the theory of things to come. My daughter plays all kinds of string instruments and she has been the inspiration for me picking up this wonderful instrument a little late in life. She helped me pick out my Yamaha 5800j and had it set up and restrung. She suggested Justin Guitar and I am proceeding through Module 1. Last evening my daughter came over with her Martin and we had a little jam session and she showed me a few tricks! I look forward to this challenging journey and having loads of fun along the way!

Yeah ! Welcome to the community Lon  Glad to see that you are having fun jamming with your daughter ! She made you a good suggestion about using Justin Guitar. It’s guaranteed that you will make good progress over the years (slowly but surely) if you stick to the course. It will be a fun journey and the Justin Guitar community will be there for you when you have questions or need a motivation boost

Welcome to the community, Lon. Your daughter was brilliant to send you to Justin Guitar, where you’ll find the best instruction around, good advice from other students further down this road, and real on-line camaradarie. I recently hit 68 and started learning 4 years ago. It’s been a great joy. Be sure to check out the Vintage Club when you’re ready, and also this thread. Have a blast!

Welcome to the community and to guitar! So fun to learn to play with and be inspired by your daughter.

I am a little jealous. When I chose to start learning at 60 yo, one of many reasons that got me off my duff to actually start was that my daughter was starting to learn violin. I thought I could be a good example of practicing and learning to help her in her process, so it was a good time to begin. Oh, well, at least one of us is still playing…I guess I should thank her for that!

Welcome to the forum Lon. Music is the best gift you can give yourself. Enjoy the journey.

Welcome

Welcome to JG Lon, you might be interested in the Vintage Club, @Richard_close2u one of the teachers on here does some great online lessons once a month.

Hi Lon, welcome to the community . Your daughter has already given you a lot of good advice. It is great that you will be able to share this journey together, especially jamming together with songs.

Welcome Lon, you’re never too old to learn. Whoever said that was just plain lazy and used age as an excuse not to put any effort into something they would have enjoyed. I’ve known a lot of people who said they wished they could play guitar. A year later they’re saying the same thing. Had they picked one up and started learning, they’d be amazed at how much they could do in just one year. Congratulations and have fun playing tunes with your daughter. You will love it.

Hello Lon & Welcome!!!
Good for you to be picking up guitar at this stage in life!!! What a great gift to give yourself - and to be starting out on the Journey with your daughter’s help? That’s priceless!!! Congratulations!!!
I generally advise “Newbies” to get a stand or wall hanger so your guitar is always at hand for when you only have a few minutes… I like to pick up mine while the coffee’s brewing… the extra 5-10 minutes here & there during the day really adds up!!!
The 2nd bit of advice is to always keep the FUN in your playing ( it’s called PLAYING GUITAR for a reason)… if you’re having a good time, you’ll play more often, the more you play, the better you get which usually means EVEN MORE FUN!!!
Best of luck to you!!!

P. S. Where in the world :globe_showing_americas: do you call home?
Also, most of here are just a bit nutty about guitar, pics of gear are always welcome!!! :hugs:

Welcome to this supportive and friendly group. I also started at 67, and I’m still here, ten years later, plugging away at it.

Hello Lon.

Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
