Hello from Patrick in Utah!

Hi! I’m Patrick from Utah. Super excited to be here and connect with y’all!

A bit about my journey - I’ve wanted to learn guitar since I was about 5 years old! (honestly one of the first gifts I ever remember receiving was a little department store guitar… it broke after a week of me carrying it everywhere.) I never really had the chance to get lessons or structured learning even though I had an acoustic guitar from the time I was 13 to maybe 25… I learned some basic chords and other beginner type things but never had structure or organization to progress.

Fast forward to my 36th birthday this year when my amazing wife surprised me with a guitar and amp! I found Justin’s videos on YouTube during a work furlough and jumped straight into Grade 1 Module 1 and honestly haven’t looked back…

Currently working through Grade 1 Module 4 and feeling really excited about the progress I’m making. It’s incredible how much structure and organization Justin’s approach provides…It’s exactly what I needed. I can’t wait to see what the future holds

Thanks for having such a welcoming community!

Hello Patrick & Welcome!!!

It’s a good idea to have your guitar on a stand or wall hanger… if you haven’t already, go get one! I find that there are often a few minutes “here & there” while I’m waiting for something - the coffee to brew, my wife to be ready to leave (“Be out in ONE minute Love”) that I have 5-10 minutes with nothing to do. When the guitar is literally “at hand”, I can pick it up and play without having to bother with getting it out of and putting it back into it’s case! I get lots of scales practice or song playing this way!

Also, keep guitar Fun… sometimes a certain technique practice can get to feel like a drag… put it aside & do something fun or motivating! This will keep the guitar in your hands & you don’t feel discouraged!
Good luck from next door in New Mexico!

Welcome Patrick and what a lovely guitar. I guess that your wife also took quite some time doing her research before buying you that gear. It’s a great guitar and a good choice. What a nice present. Enjoy the course and make good use of the forum where people are always willing to help and give advice.

Welcome Patrick, I’m in Utah also. I began my guitar playing here about 50 years ago & then let it slide by as I did other things in my life. We’re back in Utah again, I’m in my 80’s & back at it. A long break but still worth the effort of giving my best shot again. Have fun & don’t stop!

Hello Patrick.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny. Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
