Hello from Rink in the Central US

Hello from the Central US

Good afternoon. Sorry for the long intro, but I figured it would resonate with lots of folks.

Ex-guitar player getting back in. Played a tiny bit as a teenager, then life happened. Eventually got back into it and played for a few years in church with a buddy in my 40’s. Knew a bunch of songs by memory, lots of unique chord progressions, open chords, barre chords, a very small bit of lead. Had great calluses :slightly_smiling_face:. I’ve actually played until my fingers bled, haha, but eventually could play about as long as anyone wanted to. Wrote a few songs, home-recorded a couple. But that partnership ended and I had nothing pushing me forward, no reason to learn new songs, full-time+ job, etc.

After that, I played with family informally. But eventually people moved on and I had no one to play with. So I gradually fell out of playing altogether. Skill (and calluses) declined over time. At this point, I haven’t played in…maybe as long as 5 yrs. Fortunately, I do still have some of the knowledge, if not the ability.

On my path, I learned a lot, but in a sort of shallow way. I played chord progressions pretty easily at one time, but I never learned finger picking, never learned double picking, only dabbled with lead, etc. I knew the chords for lots of songs (Eagles, Mellencamp, Sheryl Crow, Casting Crowns, Third Day, lots of that kinda stuff). But for some songs I knew the verse chords but not the chorus chords or vice versa. I was pretty proud of being “a guitar player”, but I always wished I had a deeper knowledge and ability.

Anyway, you get the picture. Same story as a lot of folks here I think. I’ve been retired for a while now, have some time on my hands. So I decided to let Justin take me, as a complete beginner, from zero to “a real guitar player”. I’ve been practicing Grade 1 Module 1 for about a week now. Despite my experience, there have been some challenges in getting my chops back up. Let’s just say I’ve been humbled a bit. At least I’m no stranger to sore fingers, learning chords and progressions, strumming patterns, and to practicing. I do understand the process and the time it takes. And I understand that if you stay diligent, you do actually learn it and get good eventually.

Given my experience, I was kinda thinking a week per module through Grade 1. Maybe two months per grade, getting me through Grade 3 in six months. But that’s probably overly optimistic and there’s nothing pressuring me. I have plenty of time to invest as much as needed so it will take as long as it takes. I don’t really have a specific end goal, except to eventually not be ashamed of my playing, to not have to tell people “I used to play guitar”, and to enjoy the learning process. At this age, that seems more important than it did when I was younger.

For those who like to know about equipment: I have a couple good quality acoustics, a couple very nice electrics with a half-dozen or so pedals, a looper, a few amps, a Yamaha piano, some mics and stands. Assorted tuners, capos, etc. And sore fingers.

Everyone have a good day!

Welcome to the community Rink! Nice intro, you’ve got good history with the guitar and following Justin’s curriculum will certainly get your chops back up, fill out any gaps etc. It’s hard to say how much time per module makes sense but you can use the Nitsuj videos (Justin taking his course left handed) as a guide and he also has “move on if you can do this” lesson near the end of the beginner modules.

May I suggest the PMT course after you finish grade 1? I suspect you might like it, per the intro above! I think the first few sections are free so you can get a feel for the content and practicality.

Hi Rink,
You’ll get it back together again fast I’ll bet.
Sounds like ya got much experience behind you, plus, you were only out of the game for 5 years.
I was out of the game for 25 years and I have never played guitar with others.
I do believe ya got hope man.

I think yer doing well starting at square one though with Justin. I did that too. I for sure learned from some of his early lessons. Stuff I wasn’t aware of prior to outright stopping playing.
So go for it man. Have fun. Learn some new stuff.
Good to see some midwest folks here too. I’m from middle US too. I’ve not seen many folks from this area on the forum.

Sounds like yer all set for some gear too. Perhaps better than most even. Another way to say it is better than me. I just got middle of the road gear. Epiphones and stuff. But I like them, they’re playable and they make some music. It’s me the player that’s lacking. Not my instruments imho.

Don’t forget, you can post up some of your music here…
Everybody does it (many do anyway). All skill levels too. So it don’t matter if ya can play Bach, or kinda play a E chord. All are welcome here. Everyone here is just somewhere on the journey.

Enjoy your continued journey. Justin Guitar is a great place to land where ya can get much feedback from others. If ya want…

Welcome to the community, Look forward to hearing more from you

Welcome!! Enjoy the ride!

Greetings from Warsaw, Poland, Sir!
Welcome to the community, very helpful and friendly, even though judging from your resume it’s you who could provide some assistance to many of us!
My story is similar in many respects. I’m 73 now, started playing as a teenager and continued almost incessantly, never going pro, though. Some hiatuses occurred, too, but now, retired and with plenty of time at my disposal, I’m finally able to devote myself to playing and still learning, as the latter is a process that never ends. Got some electric guitars and effect pedals, but I’m chiefly a modeler/multieffect guy. Naturally a looper is my invaluable tool, too…
Geez, now it seems like I could talk, and talk, and talk… Enough of that.
Regards
Tomasz

Welcome to the community Rink!

Hi Rink, welcome to the community. I had a similar background as you, so I think that the 1 week per module in grade 1 is OK. It will give you time to build your calluses. You will probably take more time per module when you get to more challenging or unfamiliar topics or techniques. Have fun rediscovering your love of guitar.

Howdy and thank you.
Yes, I’m looking forward to the Music Theory. I’m reading a music theory book right now and it gets pretty deep pretty fast! I look forward to Justin helping me apply it specifically to the guitar. I did re-watch the “when to move on” video and decided I was ready to start module 2. So I’m working on that now.

Hey man.
Yes I’m looking forward to filling in gaps and learning all the stuff I skipped over before.

And yes, I’m blessed to have some nice gear. Actually, I’ve never bought an instrument or amp new. Got it all used on eBay or at a local music store. Cuz I’m cheap. That’s also why I haven’t sprung for the Justin phone app yet. Trying to get as far as I can for free. I will probably get it eventually, I can see the value of it for sure.

Thanks.
Nice to meet you. After all…the world needs more Tonys…or so I’ve read here. haha.

Hi Tomasz.
Wow, Poland, that’s a long way from where I am!
But across the globe or across the street…six strings is six strings, so we’re all guitar brothers and sisters!
Thanks for the welcome.

Thank you, sir!

Thank you!

Yes, looking forward through the curriculum…I think my “time per lesson” will lengthen, haha.

BTW…I’m sure you’re not clueless…but are you a luthier?
I’m a woodworker, and started working on an acoustic guitar several years ago. Got the soundboard done, started on the neck. Posted several YouTube videos (mainly for my Dad and my grandson to follow along), had quite a few subscribers eventually. Unfortunately, life events derailed that project. Maybe get back to it someday. Would be pretty cool to play a guitar I made myself.

Haha. My smart aleck responses live forever on the internet. Sigh.

Hi rink, I think that you meant for this to be said to the @TheCluelessLuthier

Hello Rink & Welcome!!!

This !!! :backhand_index_pointing_up:t2:

As someone stuck with “Endless Beginner Syndrome” for decades, I started with Grade 1 Lesson 1 a couple of years back & have noticed a big change in both ability & comprehension. I’m not retired yet, so don’t always have the luxury of time. That said, I use the time available to progress slowly through the modules & spend a lot of my time trying to consolidate what I’m learning… some things obviously easier than others!

By the way, I use Justin’s app for Guitar karaoke quite a bit, but it only goes through Grade 3. Most of the songs are “easy” versions so a bit simplified & often don’t really match exactly with the original version. Also, the lessons on the app don’t sync with the website - not an issue for me since I normally watch Justin’s lessons multiple times but it really annoys some students. With the background you describe, the cost of the app might be better spent on the PMT course or one of Justin’s other paid courses … just my thoughts (from one “cheap” guy to another!!!).

Best of luck to you rekindling your guitar :guitar: Journey!!!
