Hello from Ron - My unsuccessful guitar journey

First, I’m 77 and at 72 I decided that I’d like to learn guitar. So first, I watched youtube videos and then I found Justin Guitar. I stayed with Justin for a while and felt there might be more out there so tried a number of other places to learn including Fender Play which I “thought” was very good. But after a few years with Fender I realized I wasn’t progressing. Even worse, I had to admit that I was terrible. So I decided to start over from scratch. I had to decide where I wanted to learn and I decided to give Justin another go. Oh my gosh! This site, and now the app, is so advanced from where it was years ago. (Honestly, years ago when I was with Justin Guitar I wasn’t really trying that hard.) Justin Guitar has everything I need and if I am still unsuccessful, it’s my fault and not Justin Guitar. So I’m Grade 1, Module 6. Hopefully I will be practicing as much as needed. So far, so good! Thank you Justin Guitar and all the Staff Help and the Community! Oh, by the way. I find navigating the community a little confusing so I hope I have done this correctly placed this comment in the correct place.

Thank you!

Welcome Ron.

I’d say it’s pretty common to have multiple goes at learning guitar! That’s certainly my story too. I know exactly what you mean when you say about feeling that you’re progressing and then having the feeling that you’re actually going nowhere fast. To be fair I don’t think it’s necessarily that the other methods are bad, to an extent I think it reflects that guitar isn’t easy to learn. I still have the feeling that I’ve put in a lot of hours and some days I still sound horrible!

Just got to keep showing up and putting in the work :+1:

Hello Ron & Welcome back!
I hope you have a lot of fun this round & that Justin helps you to be successful!!!
Good luck!!!

Hi Ron, welcome back and welcome to the community. I had several unsuccessful tries with Justin and finally stuck with it with the new lessons when I found a time that I could practice every day in retirement. Have fun learning songs and playing the guitar.

I can’t emphasize enough (from recent experience) - find other humans. Say “listen, I know the open chords and these extras, can I play those and try to follow along?”.

A buddy with 20 years experience came over this weekend (I have 11 months experience) and we played thru the BNL album Gordon. Which is almost all open chords and had a blast. Other humans are really under rated

Thank you! Good to hear that it’s not easy to learn guitar! Knowing that I have put in a fair amount of time trying to learn, I had an acquaintance tell me that guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn. That was pretty devastating to hear. I have no interest to ever play for anyone but myself but I do want to become something more than a campfire strummer. Not that there is anything wrong with being at that level. I just want to go farther. Thank you for your encouragement!

Thank you

Thank you! I will be asking questions along the way and from what I see, plenty of people are willing to help!

Thanks Tod!

Thanks! From what I remember from Justin from years ago, this is so much better now. There are so many tools that I don’t think existed before.

I wish I could do that. I am so self conscious. I practice in the basement so my wife can’t hear me. I have an electric with a Fender Micro Mustang with earphones so I’m quiet. I have a friend who has been playing his whole life. He has offered to have me come over with his friends to “play”. I would need to progress quite a bit but even then, I would be too self conscious to actually play with someone. It would be fun though! Thanks for your comment!

Welcome back to the fray! I’ve got to ask, how do you define success? My personal goal has been to achive mediocrity. A guy can dream.

Yes. The “classic” grades 2 and 3 were combined to form the new grade 2 and the new grade 3 was added to provide more training between beginner and intermediate.

Ha! Great comment CT! Yes! Mediocrity! That could be my goal. But so far, I would have to say that I’m a pretty bad campfire strummer. I’m a rocker from way back and I don’t expect to be a Jimmy Page but I’d like to be able to play along with a lot of rock songs, I guess, in a mediocre way.

I didn’t realize that. So grade 3 is the stepping stone to intermediate. I will never be advanced but somewhere in the intermediate range would be fine for me to shoot for.

Me too. Always through headphones. She has occasionally come through the room while I’m playing. She’s never commented one way or the other on my playing, and I’ve taken it as “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything.”
