Hello from Rudi, Sweden

Hello everyone,
my name is Rudi, I live in Sweden and I’ve been a beginner guitarist for a ridiculous long period of time – over 30 years.

I got my first electric guitar when I was 14 or 15 in the mid 90´s and slowly began my journey. I didn’t last too long until I gave up. Mainly because I was self-taught and didn’t know how to progress.

Over the years I’ve been trying (and failing) to learn more.

Then one day in 2012 I came across one of Justins books and it really helped me to understand things that I’ve missed earlier witch was great, but eventually I ended up with new parts I didn’t understand and it all faded away once more.

About two weeks ago we made some space in the office at home and I found the long-forgotten Justin Guitar-book, went down the stairs and looked at my guitar, an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Heritage Cherry Sunburst, a very beautiful dust collector, and I thought to myself: I wonder if Justin has a website these days…

I found the website and the app and, as you all know, it’s awesome!

With the speed of lightning I‘ve now raced through Grade one, filling the musical gaps and finally got my head around strumming. Well at least the basics.

My fingertips hurt and I struggle with remembering five songs before I can continue.
But it is like AC/DC sang in 1975 – “It’s a long way to the top, if you want to rock ‘n’ roll”

I mostly listen to rock and pop music nowadays and I grew up with Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Guns ’n’ Roses. My fist step is to learn campfire songs to begin with.

If you read all the way down here, I have a question: Which was your first five songs that you learned to play only by memory?

Welcome Rudi and glad to hear you’ve cleaned the dust off that beautiful guitar. In answer to your question the first five songs I learned to play from memory are
Me and Charlie
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Brown Eyed Girl
The First Cut is the Deepest
Heart of Gold

Justin has lessons on all of the above

Happy playing!

Hi Rudi. Your story seems very familiar as I’m 66 and working on the same things as you. I love Sweden (only visited in the warm, sunny summer) and one of my life-long friends lives outside of Lund. Anyway, as a Rolling Stones fan one of their fun songs I learned to play early on is Dead Flowers. Also, you might take a look at Justin’s Strumming SOS courses. They cost a little money, but I took the first two and it’s really helping my rhythm work become more consistent and interesting. Have fun!

Welcome aboard, Rudi!

Wish you lots of fun on your guitar journey!

Regards the first 5 songs I could play from memory, it’s quite hard to recall for my first trial in my teenage years, but for my second attempt they were: Ring of Fire, Redemption Song, Talkin’ about a revoltion, Mercedes Benz and Wild Rover.

Welcome to the forum Rudi! I don’t remember for certain what my first 5 were, but looking back at my beginners song book they included Three Little Birds, Hound Dog, & The Gambler.

Welcome to the community Rudi. You tell an oh so familiar story ! I took the same route as you and also found Justin late 2012 and have recently moved to France didn’t really get going until the following year. Certainly no regrets so happy to hear you’ve restarted, as the new Grades and content goes way beyond the old Classic BC the books are based on.
Just wish Justin had been around in 96!

Ha! That’s nothing! I got my first guitar in 1976, and I completed Justin’s Beginner Course earlier this year (which I guess makes me officially an intermediate learner now!) so I’ve been a beginner for 48 years!

Hi Rudy, welcome to the community forum. Your story is very familiar. I got my first guitar in 1974 or 1975. I was a beginner open chord strumming for 40+ years. If you follow Justin’s new course and have fun playing every day you will eventually grow from beginner to intermediate guitar. Rock on and have fun.

Welcome to the community, great to hear of your recent progress.

  1. Blowin in the wind
  2. Lakes of Pontchartrain
  3. City of New Orleans
  4. Time of your life
  5. Wonderful tonight

That’s to the best of my recollection. Very confident of the first 3, not 100% sure of the last 2.
