Hello, I’m Simon from North London. I’m 59 years old. I’ve always wanted to learn guitar so thought I would give it a go. They say 90% of people give up guitar within the first year, so I’m hoping to be in the 10% club who keep going. I’m planning to use the resources and encouragement here to keep motivated. Fingers crossed! I’m also looking forward to seeing other progress and have fun.
All the best! Simon
Hello Simon & Welcome!!!
Stick with Justin & you will be playing simple versions of popular songs in no time… once you can hear yourself making actual music, you’ll never give up!!!
What kind of guitar? Acoustic or electric? Both have pros & cons… a lot of people have both types!
Most important advice for my money is to always keep it FUN!!! If you’re having a blast whenever you pick up the guitar, you’ll be inspired to keep going & learn the next lesson!!!
Good luck!!!
Tod from New Mexico USA
Thanks for the faith Tod! I have an beginner electric guitar. It’s a beautiful looking thing. I’m hoping I can do it justice.
Hey Simon. Welcome to the community. I started playing in my 50s thanks to the excellent courses given by Justin. Now I’m in my 60s and so very glad I stuck with it. The reward is so very good.
Yeah, what @CATMAN62 said about keeping it fun is really important.
Look forward to hearing more from you.
First of all, hello and welcome!
ThIs is mostly due to the fact that a lot of beginners think they’ll be Hendrix or Clapton or Page within a few months. (spoiler alert: you’re not).
Also because a lot of beginners underestimate the amount of practice it takes (your mileage may vary) to get anywhere. Especially in the beginning.
A guitar is a complicated piece of work and it will take time to learn what it is you’re holding in your hands an how all the pieces work together.
And most important: it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Because in the end, the most important thing about playing guitar is: having fun
Welcome Simon,
I was 60 when I started and just about to finish grade 2 having just turned 62. I’ve loved learning and the last couple of weeks have started to sing! My brain has finally got to the point where most of the chords are automatic and it has room to allow me to sing.
Be patient, I practice and learn for about 2-3 hours per week and go back and repeat often. Like you I didn’t want to give up and so had to develop this discipline. Anyway, enjoy the journey.
Hi Simon ,
Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun ![]()
The chance that you belong to that 10% has increased by many percentages because you have found the right Ininguitar… no more excuses for not succeeding now ![]()
Greetings,Rogier

Many thanks. Appreciate it ![]()
Hi Simon, welcome to the community. Interacting with the community, having a time when I can practice a little every day and focusing on learning songs has kept me learning guitar here for 4 years.
Hello Simon.
Here’s hoping you are a 1 in 10 ![]()
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. There a whole host of golden oldies over in the dog house.
Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.
Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard
