Hello, Richard from France

I’m in my mid-50s and I finally started playing guitar a few months ago (currently Grade 4, I loved playing the Blues, very satisfying :D).

I’m struggling to keep up with the technical and theoretical parts (Justin, you talk too much), but I find that progress is coming naturally as I go along.

I hope to keep up the good momentum and reach a good level one day.

Hi Richard,

Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Nice and ,

do you have to learn another instrument before the end of the year? because you are in such a hurry…

Well, as long as you have fun. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Curious about some guitar playing soon…
I also went very fast, actually way too fast to learn it completely well, but I just had only fun while learning seeing trying it all.

Greetings,Rogier

Salut Richard,

wow - how did you manage to go to grade 4 in just a few months?
Did you really practice all the content or did you skip what you didn’t like?

I wish you lots of fun and success,
Dominique

Thanks for your welcome!

To be 100% honest, I already tried to play about 25 years ago… I gave up, but I am quite sure that this “muscular memory” is still active.

Now, I am far more quiet. Childs are living their lives. I practice about 1 hour a day (or more).

I started first with “Simply Guitar” app for 5 weeks, was satisfying but courses ends with a poor level. Then jumps to Justin one’s starting at Grade 2.

I skipped all the “by ears” parts where Justin identifies notes too fast, was so frustrating :(.

I just want to chill, of course my play is not perfect, but I’m seeing progress, especially thanks to Justin’s advice:

  • make a few recordings every month,
  • play slowly but cleanly.

Disagree. He thoroughly explains what he’s doing. With other online teachers I found myself saying “wait, wait, what did you just do?” far too often. I’d far rather something be over-explained than under-explained.

To me it seems like Justin explains just the right amount, usually. Then again, I’m the kind of person who prefers novels to short stories, which is probably visible in my excessively long intro post.

Either way, welcome, @RichieLbv!

You’re probably right, Mark. As English is not my native language, I sometimes need to make too much effort to understand… It’s not that easy for me.

Hi Richard, welcome to the community forum. On the website lessons you can select the lesson notes and translate to your language. Someone with more technical knowledge than me may know how to directly translate the Closed Caption (CC) for the website lesson videos. Nous sommes une communauté internationale

Thx, Steve. Don’t worry, I’m fine with the language. It’s just that sometimes I get too much information at once and can’t focus on my shaky guitar playing.

Hello Richard.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny.

Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

We also host regular (virtual) JustinGuitar Community Open Mic events for community members.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
