Help with my E. Guitar

I have been playing the Acoustic guitar for a few months now and working through grade 2
I am keen to learn some electric guitar but I hate the sound ( and weight) of my current one. (A LP style along with a 35w practice amp) I’m sure its great for lead style stuff and crunchy etc . I was playing along to an AC/DC riff and it sounded great for that but that’s not what I’m after. I can’t seem to get a nice clean sound for learning chords , playing basic songs and strumming practice. I have the amp on clean with no gain and experimented with the guitar tone and pickup selectors.
Have I bought the wrong guitar or is it just me . Any opinions ? Unfortunately I don’t live anywhere near a shop to try some ,especially as I am a lefty.

Info on the amp you are using would be extremely helpful. You should get somewhere near to a clean tone on an LP but that will be more down to the amp you are using. Let us know what the amp is and i I am sure someone will offer a suitable setting. :sunglasses:

hope i`m allowed to post link

I’m not familiar with that amp, but looking at the front panel, one thing you should check: the push button labeled “Drive On/Off” should be in the off position if you want a clean sound.

You can most definitely get a clean sound out of an LP-style guitar if the amp is set up appropriately.

@jjw oky thanks it is off but i`ll keep fiddling :grinning:

in general, turn the gain down and then adjust ‘volume’ back up for loudness you want. That should get you in the ballpark. Take a look at the video on that link you sent. zoom in a bit and see what the amp settings are when you hear a clean you like. For super clean, turn off the reverb. It will sound a little too clean in my opinion.

The LP should give you a nice warm clean using the neck pickup. I will sometimes use the switch set to both pickups if I need a little more treble bite (I have a different brand guitar, but the design is based on LP).

edit/clarification: ‘volume’ is on the amp in my statement above. the guitar volume had some debate on another forum topic, but I set mine about 7 on a moderately high output pickup.

You can clean up a LP using the volume control on the guitar. Set it half way, Turn the gain on your amp all the way down then use the volume control on your amp for how loud you want to practice.
If you still aren’t clean enough turn the volume on the guitar down a little more and turn the amp up.

all good advice so far. if you are considering the weight of the LP to be to heavy consider swapping over to a strat with single coils, usually significantly lighter and more ergonomic for some people. also it’s really tough to beat that fender clean sound. those single coils really chime and sound amazing. one of my favorite examples is Chris Isaak - Wicked Game. I’ve heard it told that the guitar part on that song was done with a 60’s vintage reissue strat and a Deluxe Reverb amp. no FX, just the on board spring reverb. that guitar part is hauntingly beautiful.

Thanks folks . @snoxracr I will give thought to a strat of some kind. For the moment I think I will carry on with my acoustic which I like and maybe revisit the electric when I have a bit more skill . (just started G2)
Probably change my mind in a few days as usual .

Don’t know if I’m coming late to the party but perhaps a well recorded sound clip could help shed some light on the issue.

@Lefteris Thanks but have now parked the electric guitar idea and enjoying the Acoustic . As a 65 y.o beginner I have to be realistic in my expectations. Lead guitar type stuff just isn`t going to happen

You know better.
I see no harm in dreaming and trying but if you change your mind and revisit this, I’m sure this community will be helpful
