Hey everybody. Jafet from Namibia

My name’s Jafet - call me Prince-J, 17 years of age, from the wonderfully mystical land of Namibia. I’ve heard a few South Africans are here, but I’m not sure about the Namibians; I guess I’m the first! :upside_down_face:

I seem to be part of the youngest group of people here. Hearing others talking about how they learned the Kurt Cobain method of playing power chords in the 80s and 90s makes me feel like a guitar prodigy in the making haha.

My financial situation right now isn’t the greatest, and I’ve had to stick with a cheap classical guitar that’s a bit smaller than usual, but I think it’s okay for now. It’s stupidly difficult to get a recording set to record myself playing guitar with a decent quality, so using the laptop’s mic will have to do for now. Finding JustinGuitar is probably the best thing to ever happen in my journey. It’s mostly free and it doesn’t hamper my progress with a banner shouting about getting a F R E E T R I A L.

I’m currently on Grade 2 and having loads of fun. I’m actually a metalhead and I’ve always wanted to learn the techniques to play high speed metal riffing and soloing, buuuut unfortunately those same techniques that I want to learn seem to be very advanced-ish and initially it slowed down my learning. :smiling_face_with_tear:

However I’m not exclusive to metal, as I’ve shown interest in Blues (quintessential metal influence), Funk, ballads and other stuff, and now Justin’s playlists for the recommended songs for each module have exposed me to a whole new set of songs and genres I now enjoy. It’s fun to switch from Metallica to R.E.M to Dream Theater to Lenny Kravits once in a while. Thanks Justin!! Though I will mention that fingerstyle is and might remain my least favourite guitar technique, so don’t expect me to focus on it too much.

I don’t get much time to play the guitar, so for the days I do end up playing the guitar, I’ve had to condense my practice sessions. Most of the time I end up doing about 2-3 practice sessions per day instead of one, but I’ve found a few modules that I really liked, such as modules 12 and (literally at the time of this post) 13, that I’ve done as far as 4 sessions per day. Not sure if it’s recommended, especially considering that I’ve gotten nervous about how I might have been progressing too fast. Maybe the progress has to do with the guitar I currently have, I’ve heard steel string acoustic guitars are more painful and harder to play with, but that’s a story for a future time…

Sorry for the long introduction, just wanted to say hello and explain myself a bit. I love guitar and I’ll always aspire to tackle new and difficult challenges on my path to becoming a confident intermediate guitarist!

Welcome, but please don’t call blues a “metal sub-genre.”

No need to take that part seriously. I just said that because metal has a lot of blues inspirations. I acknowledge it as a genre on its own, my bad.

Nice the Prince dog in the house, welcome homie. :sign_of_the_horns:t2::sign_of_the_horns:t2: Glad you found Justin’s community.

Dude there a ton of stuff on the site that can help you with the full on glorious sounds of metal. It might not feel like it yet but the basic skills you learn including the chord progressions which will help you with rhythem guitar (backing up the solo eruption spawn of the dead) and knowing what notes to play in the solo over that rythem. Also you will learn major and pentatonic scales. Good stuff. Dont worry about your guitar yet. I played my first 16 months on a steel string acoustic. Is it harder, yeah a little bit. But so what your hand will get stronger and you will build strong hand muscles and be a ripper when you get you electric eventually. It is a good idea to see if you can get it set up good. Eother at a shop of maybe even your self if your a handy guy. Its a marathon and its rad you started now.

One of my loves is playing punk rock on acoustic and making it sound killer. The other cool thing about acoustic is you can hammer them. Lots of metal music uses an acoustical and then that will lead into the electric. Good luck and keep jamming.

More like metal is a great grand child of the blues. :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Welcome to the community Jafet and thanks for such a detailed introduction. Really nice to hear your enthusiasm and your musical interests. As you said, there are a lot of “older” guitar students in the community (I’m in that category ), but there are some young ones too!!!

Good luck with your guitar learning. Don’t hesitate to post questions if you have them. The community is a very helpful bunch of people.

Best, Ian
