I’ve done this song (and shared with this group) many times, but not since getting my new black Strat earlier this year. Admittedly this was very sloppy but still fun. I wasn’t even really worried about getting all the verses in. Just looking for a relaxed cover. Happy for any criticisms you may have though.
Have a great week everybody. I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving here in Indiana!
Nicely played, Tosh. The great thing about this song is it so open to interpretation by the performer, and you did a fine cover.
The copyright has been disputed over the years; long before Hendrix covered it … (or Mr Henley could claim any credit ! ). Disputes might have been settled, don’t know tbh.
Anyhoo, well done …
It’s always a pleasure to watch someone enjoy what they’re playing. Nothing at all wrong with your vocals. I just think that if the guitar instrumentals were a bit louder to match the voice, it would feel more like you were “in the song” rather than with it.- if that makes any sense. Great performance and sweet guitar!
Hey Tosh,
Nice to see the Black Strat in action! Also cool to see you branch out and start doing more on the electric guitar side!
While I like your Strat, I think you can improve the tone for this one with a bit more work. Not sure how you are pushing out the tone on this, so let us know.
Thanks for the feedback! I’m glad you enjoyed seeing my Strat in action. It’s been a fun journey exploring more on the electric guitar side. It’s probably the most comfortable electric guitar I’ve ever owned, and I really like it a lot.
For the tone, I’m currently using Reaper, and this particular guitar tone came from the Marshall Silver Jubilee plugin. This VST plugin for Reaper came free with my Focusrite audio interface that I bought last year. It’s a great, crunchy tone, but it may have had too much overdrive for this one. I rolled the drive down to about 25%, but a different amp sim might have been more authentic for Jimi. lol.
I’m always open to suggestions, so if you have any tips or specific adjustments in mind, I’d love to hear them!
Hi Tosh,
this song is not that simple, but you perform it perfectly
Personally, I have never tried to do Jimmy covers, it’s kind of scary
Excellent guitar, and absolutely true Strat sound!

Hi Tosh,
I have been meaning to get back to you with a “tone tip”. Do realize that a lot of tone opinion like a lot of guitar and mixing too, is subjective. So this is only my take on a point or 2.
To me your tone is a bit “thin”. Part of this may be the amp sim. I have a tough time really getting an amp sim to sound good. I also had a hard time with real tube amps and I think the issue there was I could not blow the windows out. You have to do that with a tube amp to get them to sing.
So really, I am not much of a tone junky expert. Certainly not along the lines of someone like @kasper.
I am not really sure what to tell you on your sim. Maybe try another. Play with the input gain via the guitar pot, amp input gain and what have you to get the best tone you can. But even with the tone you have right now it can be made better by dual tracking it. To do this, my method is to set up a good drum beat that will either be used in the recording or is similar, sometimes simpler is good. Once you have that, lay down track 1 to the drums. Next, play back the drums and track 1 guitar. Even playing the same thing on both tracks (but use different recordings and don’t simply “double up” the tracks by a copy and paste), will give you a much fuller sound when both tracks are played back together. They don’t have to be identical. Close counts! Or better yet play track one on the low strings and track 2 on the high strings. The ultimate is what the Beatles and others do or did. One player would play a chord down low on the neck and maybe leave a couple strings out. Player 2 would play the same or a complimentary chord up the neck and possibly leave out a note or 2 while adding in what player 1 left out.
Try the above. You might be surprised at what dual tracking can do for overall guitar tones…
