im just getting back into guitar at 34 years old, I tried and failed in my teens.
figure its a good hobby for my mental health and a nice tangible skill I can actually learn now that I just have a more mature outlook on life.
im looking forward to the actual learning process this time as opposed to when I was a teen I wanted to skip right to knowing how to play heavy metal solos.
started with a nice acoustic this time, and so far I am liking the program on this site.
It is definately good for mental health! My son (11) just said yesterday that playing guitar was fun to which I responded, I really enjoy the learning process. It’s amazing how much maturity has changed my mind on the whole learning process. I wish I could get across to the kids now. They seem to be in the same boat as you were, they want to be like Guitar Hero day one and get frustrated when that does not happen. Then I remind them that Yo-Yo Ma still practices every day. It doesn’t help but I tell them anyway.
Hi Drew, welcome on the the forum! You are still much younger than a lot of people here, so plenty of time left to learn.
As a mature learner we are probably more patient than in our younger years, so at least this might be an advantage of starting later in life. Have fun and enjoy the process!
Hey Drew–welcome in to a new home, should you decide to spend some of you time here.
As someone almost twice your age, I can very truthfully say I wish I had started much younger. For a long time I’ve looked with longing as friends picked up their guitar, harmonica, mandolin, penny whistle, or sat down at the piano and brought a group together in joyous harmony(?), well, joyous at any rate.
Hi Drew, welcome to the community forum. Justin’s site has a lot that you can enjoy learning, especially song lessons on the website. Have fun learning this time around.
Hello Drew.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny. Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard
