Hi all, Ruben from the Netherlands

Hi everybody, I’m Ruben from Utrecht the Netherlands, I’m 52 almost 53 young and in no way i’m feeling to old to learn the guitar.

I just got my squier telecaster last week and hope to pick up the playing reasonably fast, because the audience is waiting for me. but for now i’m grade 1 module 1 module 2 soon and allready can change from chord a to d and vice versa 8 times in a minute…yeah…

I will look for a real life teacher two because with only videos I can not precisely know when to move on or when to go back to a video earlier. if you know what i mean.

Great to meet you all and who knows maybe some niceconversations will grow here.

Welcome Ruben! Many of us beginners have struggled with “when to move on”. Take a few minutes to search the Community and you might find some guidance. One mantra I keep in mind, especially as a beginner, is “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.”

Hello Ruben,

Welcome aboard!
I, too, went for a real teacher, but… after 3 courses I stopped. He just told me that I was going good (especially with finger placement and "bad habits I was afraid to get). So I stick with Justin.

Regarding how to switch to the next level… I know what you mean (I’m in module 3, grade1, so very green).
At the end of the last lesson, Justin tells you what to expect. And… “you’ll know” when you can switch to the next level. I mean, you will find you’re confident to do so. You’ll feel that switching is not cheating with yourself. Is not going to fast.
Strange feeling, but so rewarding to see you can trust yourself

Hello Ruben & Welcome!!!

I advise you to buy a wall hanger or stand for your guitar… when it’s easy to pick up & play when you only have a few spare moments… you’ll play more often which will help you improve faster! Plus it’s fun to just spend a few minutes while waiting for something… I like to play while my coffee is brewing!!!

Welcome Ruben, you’re in for a lot of fun!

I tend to move on when I start getting bored. If I find myself not looking forward to practice then it’s probably time for something new.

Welkom Ruben!

Check out the Nitsuj-lessons also, first of all because it’s really nice to see the man himself fumbling on. But it also gives a good grasp of what to do/know before moving on.

Hey Ruben - I started playing 13 years ago at the same age you are now. Sticking with it was a challenge at first and I’m so glad I did. The reward is just stupendous. Hang in there, you won’t regret it. Looking forward to hearing more from you. Justin Guitar is where I got most of my start.

Hello Ruben.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.

We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.

Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.

If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.

Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny. Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.

That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.

Cheers. Richard
