Hi! David, bass player from Maine learning jazz guitar

Bassplayer of 24yrs starting out on guitar. Really liking the vibe of Justin’s website. My goal is to play jazz guitar, mostly comping, to lay down changes on my looper over which I can play my bass.

Very happy to have found this community - it seems like a great place to call home.

Hi David, welcome to the community. Being a bass player should give you a good head start on learning rhythm guitar.
Cheers

Hi David,
Welcome and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses:,

Too bad about your order …first bass then guitar…but the end of your dark (heavier)Bass (period) tunnel is near , I see light for you

(ps:It’s a matter of time before a bass guitar here )

Hi David, welcome. Sounds pretty interesting, learning guitar to accompany the bass. A bass is not in my gear wish list but I like sometimes play with the octave pedal effect of my guitar modeller.

Welcome Dave. It really is a great place. Bass guitar, that’s cool, my husband just took it up 4 months ago. I started with guitar shortly after that. Any particular types of jazz you’re interested in?

Hello LunaRocket!

Yea, while bass is my first love in music, I am eager to apply what I’ve learned on bass toward guitar. Mostly I want to be able to comp over tunes in The Real Book. I figure I will lay down a drum line (from a drum machine) on a looper, then lay down a bass line on the looper, and then comp with guitar. This will let me play both bass and guitar and listen to music I love to hear.

hey dobleA.

Yea, I will be continuing to play bass at band rehearsal and our gigs so I will be keeping those chops up as best I can. I’ve been missing though learning something new and understanding chords better. Learning bass has been so much about time and feel and learning enough to walk but I know stretching my knowledge on upper extensions will help me spice up my basslines too.

Hello David and welcome! It’s very nice to read you know clearly what your goals are! When I read “Maine” only one thing occured to my mind " Murder, she wrote":rofl::rofl: I wonder you’re too young to actually know this
Hope to hear your guitar and bass soon!

Welcome David!

For me, Jazz comp is the nirvana of guitar playing and I can only dream of getting there one day. Would be very interested in seeing you growing your guitar skills and what you do with them. Keep us posted.

If you have a recording of you playing jazz bass, that would also be interesting to hear.

Welcome again, and hope you enjoy your time here.

Actually I am 60, so old enough to remember  Although I never watched the show…

David, welcome to the community. You should be able to find a lot of what you need in Justin’s website. I notice that a lot of the riffs that Justin uses in the beginner course grades 1 and 2 are bass line riffs on guitar and a lot of rock song intro riffs have both electric guitar and bass playing the same riff simultaneously. I also first learned rock guitar in a book that played bass line patterns over the A, D and E power chords. Some musicians like Paul McCartney play guitar, bass and piano. So you should do well in these lessons.

Hello David - welcome to JustinGuitar and the community. Coming from bass your fingers will be accustomed to some of the necessary work to form and play chords and you may be able to make swift initial progress. Enjoy!
