Hi from Amber in Belgium!

I’m Amber, my story started about one year ago when I read this amazing book and was introduced to the 70s! Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, Queen, Nirvana and many more legends graced my ears with their music, so when my dad bought a Yamaha pacifica I couldn’t be more eager to start and become as awesome as them .

… which turned out to be a little bit harder than I expected :face_with_peeking_eye:. I’m not the most consistent in my practice (in my defense, it was my last year in high school and I was -stressing- about what to do next) so I got stuck in Module 1 lesson 5 or something. BUT new year new me, I found a way to cram it somewhere between uni classes, orchestra and sports and now I’m halfway through Module 6!
Really the thing that helped me stay consistent was choosing one song (Wish You Were Here :heart_hands:) and filming myself playing it, because over time I saw myself improving. Btw if anyone has more tips feel free to share! Merlin knows I could use it, and maybe others will also benefit.

Wishing you all a fun time learning this cool instrument!

Hallo en welkom hier!! Hello and welcome here!
Hier zitten wel een paar mede-belgen… There are a few fellow belgians to be found here…

Great to hear that you’ve found your drive back. Now remember, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.
Best of luck in your guitarjourney, I can only hope it can stay crammed in that busy agenda i see there.

Have fun!!

Hello Amber and welcome it is nice to meet you cheers Hec

welcome

Hello Amber
Dag Amber, Welkom op de JG Community ^^

We have several other Belgians here, including myself ^^

A good practice routine is of course important. try playing every day for at least 5 minutes rather than piling it up and doing only one or two long sessions.

Why do I say only 5 minutes? becauseas soon as you are playing, the 5 minutes become 10, 15, … and yet, if some days it’s only 5, that’s cool. We can all fit in 5 minutes of guitar each day, right?

It’s a bit of psychology that actually works

Also, keep it fun and try to apply what you learn technically in songs.
Endless repeating a mechanical part has no use if you don’t use it in songs.
Combining a song and other aspects like ceartin chords to practice,a pattern, a melody, whatever… the practice will wok for the song and the song will make you practice a bunch of things at once.

Good luck and don’t be a stranger.
Check the Tips category and the Live Clubs archive for a lot of extra material that isn’t so apparent on the website

Hello Amber & Welcome!!!

Sounds like you are a very busy young lady… it also sounds like you are on track to learn guitar!
What @LievenDV says is spot-on! Especially keeping it FUN & learning songs!
Good luck with Wish you were here! It’s a good tune to have in your pocket if someone hands you a guitar & wants you to play something!!!

Welcome Amber. Filming yourself is a great idea. I’m amazed how much better I am than when I recorded my first song a year ago.

Mega leuk! Belgium may be small, but I’m always surprised how active we are in the global community.
Btw that’s such a nice analogy, I will keep it in mind.
Groetjes!

Dag Lieven! Thank you for the tips, especially about the resources on the website. Sometimes I find it a bit confusing what I can use and where I can find it, but I will be watching those live clubs!
Now that you’ve written it down like that, I remember I used to do that with my other instrument, subconsciously. I would take it out of its case, install myself and play a few notes, and once that was done I always found something to practice on for the next 30 minutes. It really is a handy psychology trick.
Groetjes!

Hello Tod! Thank you, I can’t wait to have someone ask me to play that amazing song. Though I do have a bit of stage fright so perhaps I shouldn’t go and scream it from the rooftops as we say here.

One more thing Amber,
Justin has several (3 or 4?) video lessons specifically on Wish You Were Here. He goes into the song pretty thoroughly in those lessons… if you’re more interested in the Intro, Justin’s Grade 2 Module 8 lesson covers that.
You may already be aware of all this… just letting you know in case you don’t! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Have Fun!!!

Tod

Actually, that’s where I learned it! But I haven’t really looked at the solo because that’s waaay above my current skill level :upside_down_face:. The solo will be my next goal!
Either way, thank you for checking in!

I’m not sure if you have noticed… most of us in the Justin Community are a bit (Ok, ok, a LOT) over the top about all things guitar! :guitar:
Therefore, pics of your guitar & other gear is always welcome! What kind of guitar did your Dad get for you?

Welcome Amber! Wish you were here is a lot of fun. It’s definitely one of those tunes I can reliably enjoy playing every time. Here’s to hoping you can stick with it through these young adult years - you’ll be a pro before you hit 30! One thing I think a lot of people that played when they were younger and quit all seem to have in common is that they always wish they would have stuck with it.
